My first AutoX - What to expect?

I'll be driving with a nice new built 350 by Don, and we estimate that this motor will be putting 320 ± 10 hp to the wheels. My car has a fresh suspension, all new moog bushings, 1LE endlinks, 36/23 bars, moog 5662/CC635, 1LE rear LCA bushings, 1LE brakes, and Bilstein HDs. I will be running 245/50/16 G-force sport comp 2s. I was aiming for a factory setup and factory like performance; will it be fun on the AutoX? Planning on hitting Camrillo Airport AutoX when my motor is broken in.

That's a good starting set up

I would recommend that you don't go ball out on your first run
Run a few laps to et a feel of your car and once you feels that everything is good then go fast but not to fast

As for power that's a good number

If you have access to another car take it to the track. Or, if you can control your right foot and not plant it on the floor, take your car as is but take it easy. First time out you'll be learning whatever the local procedures are and how to read the course etc. etc. The point is don't wait.

Re: My first AutoX - What to expect?

You have to compete before you know for sure how much you like it. I believe you will, and it varies how much you like to autocross.

The most important thing to learn your first season of racing is to have FUN. For most people, it will take many years of racing depending on how often you race to start winning, especially if your class has a lot of competitors in it.

You should not do any more modifications to your car for autocross competition for your first season or 8 races, whichever comes last. You have a summer tire with suspension in good condition so you don't have to compromise your learning early on. Contrary to Base91, I believe that it is easier to learn if you have the ability to ONLY race your Camaro, so you don't have to learn the driving dynamics of another car, unless you really want to understand how different manufacturers and different chassis' react to competition.

Another thing to expect is to get your *** handed to you. Depending on your area, you may have more horsepower than 90% of the total competition and you may have several excellent drivers beating you with 110 horsepower civics and miatas with stickier tires.

Remember, to have FUN. Autocrossing is for fun, so if it's not enjoyable, you shouldn't be out there.

Re: My first AutoX - What to expect?

When you arrive early, ask to help set up the course and when the chance arrives walk the course. Try to go last or as close to last as possible so you can watch everyone else drive it and take mental notes. Pick out a few good drivers and nicely approach them and ask if you can ride with them or they would ride with you. And as they said earlier, try not to go full throttle quite yet...
