Car: 89 RS 89 iroc 87 firebird

my lil experiment
so while i had the car down to pull out the slipping 4l80 and put back in a stock 700 until i can get the 4l80 looked at i decided i really dislike the smooth idle and stock sound of the 224/224 cam.
this engine n/a and carbed originally had a 234/244 .488/.510 cam in it so i decided to put that back in
the experiment is to see just how much having the wrong cam in a turbo car is going to hurt it
idealy this cam is good for a supercharger or blower , but not a turbo charged engine, much less one with a tpi intake on it.
but hey it atleats sounds somewhat mean
i havent been able to drive the car yet as the original shift cable broke when i was tighting down the linkage on the trans so i have to find a new one first.
heres a short clip of getting the idle and timing set
bumped idle timing back to 30* it idles better now , have to change my iac settings though as this cam drives it a lil crazy trying to hold a steady idle.
right now its setup to hold a 850rpm idle , im going to change it so its only active on cold starts once the motor reaches 140* ill have the iac fully close and ill set idle speed witht he adjusting screw on the tb

Re: my lil experiment
by all rights it should be down on power,
but ive seen firsthand a few turbo cars with cams on like 106/108 lsa's with huge duration that make damn good power
it will be interesting to see how well this cam works out

Re: my lil experiment
im thinking ill have some low rpm cruise issues. but i belive i can get arround those by keep the trans out of overdrive below 55 mph.
speed limit is 80mph on the highway so i shouoldbe able to cruise pretty well.
the chopy idle is causing havoc with my iac but ill do what i did before and disable iac from trying to control idle speed and use it for cold start only
right now i just need to pick up a new shifter cable which i should have next week before i can start driving it again.
dam cable broke on me when i pulled the 4l80 out and put in a stock 700r4 back in for the time being so i could have the 4l80 looked at since 2nd started to slip

I did this years ago in my 355 procharged with little P600 and blow through carb.. Got board and threw in my 252/258 on a 106 LSA.. Car trapped 3 mph higher from 128 to 131.. But had a nasty bog requiring tons of Pump shot - I suppose due to lack of vac signal initially and Air stalling out during throttle opening.
Only had to track once with the bog running 10.7s - then tore apart and sold the P600 as I was going BBC. I was really surprised - lost 4 lb boost and ran stronger according to MPH..

Re: my lil experiment
what did that cam do with ur afr's did u have a wideband in the car?
im concerend my wideband may not read corectly if i am blowing unburnt fuel and air into the ex . which could also bring up tunning issues , so i think ill rely more on plug readings then my wideband
with more overlap and boost presure im thinking that even if some of the charge gets blwon out the ex valve it may make for a cleaner charge in the cyl
so theres deff a few ways to look at this
even thought he cam is large ( for a tpi cam) its still on a 112 lsa

Re: my lil experiment
well the ole butt dyno says not to bad
spoolup is a tad bit lazy in first gear, but thats actually a good thing in my case, before this thing woudl blow the rear tires right off , now it has a chance to grab some traction at lower rpms
its still pulling pretty damn hard once its in full boost
old cam ='s full boost at 2,800
new cam ='s full boost at 3,600
have some slight low rpm cruise issues to sort out , but im also running a very tight converter right now till i get my 4l80 back
soon as i get a new shifter cable installed on tuesday ill deff get some driving vids posted up
