Little 355 Z28 runs 10s...
Well I havent posted on here in forever, so I figured i would share my newest car with everyone!! I used to have an 86 Iroc with a 350 that ran 12.00 @ 111 mph...and i broke the 10 bolt...go figure...
So in my travels I found an 84 Z28 in jersey on yellowbullet.com for like $3500 with a 12 bolt, 8.50 chrome moly cage..etc...so i went and got it.
After about a year and a half I got it to where it is now...and it has landed my #1 in points in super street at Cecil County Dragway in their Street Car Shootout series. Not too bad for my rookie season and first full season ever...winning the July race to boot.
The car gets a lot of questions...but here it is:
HRE 355 smallblock ALL MOTOR
Erson cam (smaller than youd think)
Brodix track 1 heads
single plane manifold (super vic thats too big but ready to go on a 406" motor)
Hooker super comp headers with bullets.
approx 12.5:1 compression
Trans:
Sepanek Racing turbo 350 trans with lightweight stuff
ATI 5300 converter (8")
Spohn pro torque arm
Spohn front coilovers on cheap koni 90/10's
Pa racing k member
Strange front drag brakes
stock a arms
STOCK rear shocks
adjust LCA'S
ADJ Panhard bar
anti roll bar
12 bolt Moser rear with spool and 4.10 gears
The car weighs 3100 right now with me in it...thats with 100# weight bar in trunk to plant the rear tires...yes 255 drag radials (27" tall on 7"wide rim).
The car runs dead on consistent 10.1x-10.2x (in heat) @132-133mph. 1.39-1.40 60'.
Hoping this winter I can get some rear shocks and coilovers...and some new headers.

Very nice man, anyone that doubts it is a fool, not like you are running a 3550 with 9.5:1 and vortec heads. Wish my ride was that light! I would go with a converter that high if I was not going to drive the car on the street. What size is your Trans cooler?

That is cool man, wasnt sure if it saw streets, but I am at the point in life that I always went 90% street an 10% strip, now I want a 95% strip car that CAN be street driven. Funny how taste changes, lol.

Very Nice! Nice to see another 350 na running so strong. We have very similar setups, but you definetly have your chassis dialed in a lot better than I do. I know what you mean by a lot of questions. Nobody believes mine is only a 350na smallblock, and your a lot faster than me. Everybody thinks you have to have an LS or nitrous, or a turbo to be fast. Keep posting. I'd like to know how fast you can get it to go.

Re: Little 355 Z28 runs 10s...
Thanks everyone!! Yea my engine builder has a crank and rods to make the 406...but i want to run 9'sit with the 350. I think an air pump and header will do it no problem..just need the money.
Street driving makes it harder to go faster on race day. I could add a trans cooler and go for a drive..it just dont do it for me...i like the wheelies!!!
Greezemonkey...i love your car!! Dont worry...we have a 68 chevelle weighs 3485lbs and runs 9.30s with an NA 468"...on 275s

Isn't that the truth. How about 3800 lbs?
Light weight is the way to go but it's tough to do in a fully equipped street car isn't it?
Nice car.

Thanks...everyone i know with a driven car is minimum 3200 with 55% of the weight on the nose...not good for a small tire car.
I love the street car look though!!

I must say, in the desire to go faster, I have been thinking gen 1 S10 or coupe mustang. Then today I saw a rolling chassis 9 inch Equiped Chevy Luv FS at the swap meet, lol.

that car is such a sleeper.....the casual passers-by would probably peg it as your typical mid 12 or slower third gen, nice work!!!!

That car does run nice for the combo!! Congrats on points as well..
Just noticed you are at Cecil, that is where I got my 9.4 in the 6 speed last year.. Plan to make an MIR trip soon as I usually do a few times per year.. Visit MIR much?

unkown_host...i shift at 7100 rpms.
Ibmtec...we actually calculated the car to run 9.80s at 134. My headers are holding me up and it needs a lower 1st gear...we got the mph to go 9.85ish but are missing the ET.

yes sir! and i'm brewing something up that should be pretty stout for a street car....just gotta figure out how to get tags for this thing once we get moved up there...i don't have inspection/emissions down here so i've never had to do anything like that.

If its MD you just get historic tags...no inspection etc. Its that easy.

Wow..yes old thread. My cam is an erson solid roller...i have to remember...its like 260ish @ 0.50 and like. 780 lift roughly.
I shift at 7200 rpms...and i run a 5300 stall converter. Waiting for the fall to try and bust into the 9.70s since the car is lighter with more gear now.

or most of the heads up guys. I've spun a stock bottom end 350 to 7200 a few times on accident lol. a friend of mine would spin one to 7600 in his pulling truck. stock crank, powdered rods, hyper dome pistons. thrown together in his garage without a balance job or anything. talk about spinning the chambers....lol

Re: Little 355 Z28 runs 10s...
I know it happens, just not typical for a 350. Not for what is around here. Especially in street cars. When you can do mechanical cam and all that, of course. I'm just getting spoiled to these gen III and IVs. My last 383 spun 6700, which is making power with 383 cubes.

Re: Little 355 Z28 runs 10s...
I spun my stock short block L98 to 7000RPM many times. 350 is small cubes and anything over 3000lbs is heavy. RPM gets you home. I also was doing this with a hydraulic roller cam. I finally cracked a ring land on one of the stock hypers after several hundred passes. I don't think it was the RPM that did it in. I think it went a little lean due to an oil leak and detonated to death.

Re: Little 355 Z28 runs 10s...
No rod bolts? Most I see have upgraded.
The oil from PCV has me ready to try a separation system, I know that much. Been enough talk about it to get me motivated to try something.
My buddy had a 355 with 12:1 and mechanical in his street truck, spun the fire out of that thing. He offered to sell it but I didn't have the money. Was dart heads and the works.
I am so used to everyone going beyond 355 cubes.

Stock rod bolts. I wish I had done the separator for the PCV system...it may have saved my motor. The PVC was hooked to a manifold port close to number 8. I can't prove it, but it was suspicious.

That's crazy, I imagine the older 1 piece rear mains are on borrowed time. The powdered metal rod vortec engines and LT1s I have seen live for a long while.

my dad has a 355 that's been around a long long time. ran it with some old 462 casting double humps on methanol. ran 10.80's in a 2600lb tube chassis monza back in 92-94 time frame. really simple, 10.5:1 with a torker II intake and cam. no port work to the heads that i'm aware of. they can be plenty fast

I actually hate the damn sunroof but it makes it easy to see the parachute handle. Lol
We have a 93 notchback mustang on my race team with a small block that runs 9.50s. We slow it down to run 10.00 index though.

hell yes! i'm going to be at YB Nats in September. Verdict is still out on getting the car there or not for that race. i'm having a lot of opposition finding a job up here with my degree. the old "gotta have experience to get a job, got to have a job to get experience" thing.

if i can come up with the cash for tires/tubes/gas/entry, etc, i will run pro-dial. just don't think i can slow it down to 11.50, and don't want to spray to 10.0 just yet...
