Re: GTA (re)build thread

Got them test fitted to my car. Going to double check the fit on my buddies car to make sure my car isn't a freak, then I'll make up a batch of them. Just pm me if you're interested, I won't ask for any money until they are ready to go out, probably toward the end of the week. Just so we are all on the same page, this goes on the inside firewall, not the big plate to cover the heater box holes. I made it because I was concerned about water or mice/insects getting thru the cowl and into the car.

Lol sorry if there was confusion. I got the outside plate from a guy on ebay. I've actually ordered 2 from him, 1 for me, one for my buddies car. I think they were around $60 shipped. .082 aluminum

I got a local guy that did my buddies car for 2k . It's not 25.5, but a great foundation to build on in the future. Chromoly tubing. Mine will be identical.

is this the plate you made? if so I already blocked mine off from inside the car. I was thinking you were talking about the entire firewall piece, guess I'll have to make mine out of the aluminum sheet I bought then

Not sure if its the regular price, or if name dropping the friend of a friend has anything to do with it. I don't know if I'm ever going to need a 25.5 with this car. I just simply don't see myself having the budget for anything beyond what I'm going to be doing now. Not looking to set the world on fire, just want to have fun and be at least semi competitive in this class and have as little maintenance as possible.

Re: GTA (re)build thread

yes...that's the plan. i need to finish school and find a job, but my wife is from that area and wants to move back. i have no real ties here, so as soon as i'm done, we'll load up and head that way. i will have questions about getting cars tagged up there that may not be inspectable if you know any tricks...

Re: GTA (re)build thread

Lol I was a MD state inspector before I moved here. If you have any questions let me know. As far as legality you need all emissions and safety equipment. Most counties have emmisions testing as well, which is obd2 checks on 96 and newer, tailpipe test on obd1 cars. Inspections are a 1 time deal, emissions is every 2 years. 20 years and older you can get historic tags, 25 years and older you can get street rod. No inspection required for either. I still recommend you stay away from MD however....

What exactly does an applied mathemetician do???? You can put historic tags on the turbo 6.0 car. There really is no check....

I can do lots of stuff. Working with engineers would be my most desirable job. I can do cryptography, I'll be able to do some computer programming, graph theory is used highly in civil engineering. The NSA is the country's single highest employer of mathematicians. I could also do actuary work for an insurance company...

Re: GTA (re)build thread

Wish I actually had an update on this thing, but other then some tinkering with some wiring, I havent done much. Reason being, I am STILL waiting on the rear end housing! Needless to say, I am pretty disapointed. After some voicemails and an email, they did call me and said it was on the jig, and that they have been busy. That was over 2 weeks ao. I understand being busy, but I ordered and paid for this thing on May 10th and was told 4 weeks at that time. At this point its really holding up progress. I cant order axles until I have the housing. Once I get the axles, I can see if my wheels fit (they should). If not, Im ordering new ones and then its off to get a cage.....

I did get my manual rack from Spohn, and its a good looking piece. Cant wait to unbolt that heavy steering box and linkage.

i just ordered my chromoly housing last week. should be here monday. its a weld together yourself deal. gonna be alot of fab work going into this one, so im not sure how long its going to take me to get it it together. going to try to sort of mimic the new racecraft fab rearend. most likely going to make all my own brackets and everything. will post pics of my progress.

i would like to see some pics of the spohn rack once its in the car..... i've been tossing around the idea of going to one of those if i don't put the factory power box back in the car. i like the power steering!

Re: GTA (re)build thread

I havent had power steering in 6 years. Wrestling the gta 1.5 turn lock to lock box was getting old lol. good luck welding up your housing. Id be really interested in seeing it come together. At this rate you may be done before I get mine back!

Im going to have the chassis shop weld the rack mounts on. Our welder at work is only a 120 volt. The brackets are pretty thick and I just dont think it would get good enough penetration. Not exactly an item I want to take a chance with.

Re: GTA (re)build thread

Well I finally have something good to report. Rear housing was delivered and it is a work of art! A bit heavier then I anticipated tho. 80 pounds for the bare housing, plus the torque arm bracket that is very beefy, probably 15 pounds. I ordered axles yesterday and found out some more bad news. Strange will only gun drill axles up to 30 inches long. Mine are 30.5 and 31.5..... Looks like the pair will be 50 pounds instead of 25 or so. I did get the lightenend flange option, but that only saves 1.5 lbs per axle. My goal was to weigh the same as a 7.5. I believe I failed 58 for the center, 80 for housing, 15 for bracket and 50 for axles equals 203. Stock is 135.... Oh well. I tried. Need to hang the brake calipers and make lines so I can weld the brake line tabs on and paint or powdercoat it. Bought a new house so Ive been laying low on the spending as of late. But I will have a nice garage to roll this thing into next month!

Re: GTA (re)build thread

did they mean they will only gun drill to the depth of 30"? if not, that sucks and i'll keep that in mind for the future.
also, the housing probably has .250" axle tubes which are heavy as crap. mine will be heavy as well.

No, they wont drill an axle at all that is longer then 30 inches. I should have called Mark Williams, but its a little late now. I would have got a narrowed rear, but I have 3 sets of wheels for it already. Axle tubes are .180 thick
