The absolute best 16" DOT tire???

I now run Hoosier Quick Time DOT's and traction was never an issue as long as I did a full burnout. I recently installed a programmable box to my 6AL which includes a launch rev limiter and launch timing retard. With this new toy, my launch technique includes brake torquing to 2000 rpm (rev limited setpoint). The launch retard is set to 15 degrees which transitions to full timing in 1.5 seconds. My only outing to the track with the new launching method yields all sorts of wheel spin, even after heating them up for what seems an eternity. Needless to say, my 60 foot times are worse than before because of this new launching method due to a power increase. BTW, I have a 700R4.

So what's the ultimate race-only DOT approved tire for a 16 x 8 rim? And please don't say drag radials. In my opinion, they are a compromise (at best) between traction at the track and street usage. I will be using these tires at the track only. Thanks.

The only race-only DOT tires I know of that are not radials are MT ET Streets and Hoosier Quick Time Pros.

MT has a couple of sizes for a 16" rim. I don't know about the Hoosiers

Thanks for the reply Stephen. Do you have experience with either of the tires you mentioned? (I wonder how much more grab the Hoosier Quick Time Pros have in comparison to their "base" Quick Times...)

How about better rear brakes, brake calipers or a better, adjustable rear brake proportioning valve!!!

Just a thought!!

Sounds like you were disappointed last Friday!

ET Streets are a great tire. I see LS1 and LT1 cars running low 11's and hi 10's with them tires. The 60' times on theese cars are around 1.6 and better. I've also seen alot of stock 10 bolt headed to the scrap pile because of them tires.

It's not my rear brakes that are the problem. It's when I release the brakes and mash the gas. My new launching method puts a LOT more torque down. My weakest link becomes my tires (again). Not only did I squeal to at least 60 feet, but this was confirmed by the guy that was lined up behind me with his '96 Z28 watching. We parked next to each other after the runs and talked.

Sounds like you were disappointed last Friday!

It was a surprise I didn't expect. So yes, I was somewhat disappointed. But to put things into perspective, I was there to try out my launching technique and evaluate my 60 foot times, so I did accomplish my goal. Same as the week before when I didn't really care about my times, only scanner data aquisition. Once I get this problem ironed out, I should be a sizeable decrease in 60-foot times, something on the order of Tim Burgess' 60-footers (remember, I have a 4,000+ flash stall Vigilante).

I ran high 11's on ET streets.

Quick Times are like MT Sportsman Pros. They have a lot of tread for street use. Quick Time Pros are like ET Street tires with a couple of thin rain grooves.

At the track ET Streets are great but driving around in town, they feel really mushy on corners. They really shouldn't be street legal, go around a corner at 20 mph and hit a little puddle and you lose your backend.

All DOT "slicks" are created for one purpose. Drag racing in DOT tire class. They are never intended for the street. They only have enough rain grooves to pass a DOT requirement to get the rating.

Willie,

What seems odd to me here is that Tim Burgess ran those same Hoosier tires for years with 1.6 sec. 60’ and 12 sec. ETs at the same track and he dumped at over 5,000 rpm!!!

What is so different that you can't hook? I know your tires are skinnier since you wanted the 16” stock rims………

ODD!!

Maybe sticky “wide” tires are in order here with some chassis tuning.

Agreed. I do not know the difference.

willie,

Have you tried an adjustable torque arm, Ive been reading great things about changing pinion angle. I have drag radials and they are a joke at best when I mash the go pedal and come off the converter. I was just curious because that was my next step and it looks like we have cars with about equal power.

Just my .02, but I had a BFG DR's on my car w/ the old combo. low 1.7 60 ft. times were the norm. However, I wasn't able to mash it off the line. I had a stock 7&5/8 rear and didn't want to have to sweep it up. Now that I have a 12 bolt and a more powerful motor, I am switching to ET Streets.

BTW - I heard in the radial bracket at the F-body shootout in GA a few eeks ago a 1st Gen ran low 9's on BFG DR's.

M/T ET Streets by far. 26 or 27x11.5 x 16. My 28x11.5 got me 1.6X 60's in a 3900lb 69 Chevelle SS with sbc/4 speed, sidestep clutch at 5100 RPM. i use tubes and while they add more weight i enjoy the hi speed stability and need the exta firmness with a stick. Fair burnout required nothing extravagant. they wear well and mine are down to the wearbars with about 60 passes and plenty of street use. Still have grooves but havent been to track lately to see how well they still hook. Great tires for the money, i will be buying another set or possibly all out slicks for size availability (need 29" to band-aid something)

ET Streets hands down. 13# of air, moderate burnout and I got a 1.46 60`. Nitrous came in about 10-20` off the starting line on that pass. My converter flashes around 3500 and I load it to 2000. Next time out I`ll spray it as soon as possible and let you know if they hold. Best "street" tire out there IMHO.
