The things that helped me the most were:
1. Walk the course at least twice.
2. When driving, be looking 4 moves ahead.
These couple of things and some slight car mods let me beat a modified '98 Z28 with my 3.1 RS

SSM SFC's
Energy Susp. Hyper-flex kit
GTA Sway bars
Clarion, Phoenix Gold, JL Audio, etc.

www.sccaforums.com and browse some of the threads. There are two threads that I have in mind: One is a question regarding the best autox advice ever received and the other is basically the same question that you just asked.
My advice would be to find someone else with a Camaro/Firebird/Mustang and talk to him. As a group, autocrossers are pretty open and helpful. Also, if you get comfortable with one of the people you talk to, ask 'em for a ride with they drive.
