traction compound and street tires
how does traction compound affect street tires?will they get soft and sticky?will it shorten the life a lot?I run 285/40/ZR17's and need traction because they are really a high speed tire not a drag race tire and I want to run my car the same at the track as I do on the street(at least for now)but would not mind spraying the tires if it helps

The Z-rated tires have a hard compound. They come with less tread depth new so you get less deflection. To make up for milage they make them harder. The harder compound and almost no deflection make them ideal for high speed handleing. A softer compuond H-rated tire will stick better but the large tread depth and softer tread blocks won't feel so good at high speeds. It's a compromise anyway you look at it. There are racing DOT tires like BF-goodrich R-1s that are very sticky and have little deflection but thier tread life is about 5000mi to a set.
