need advice on getting into Auto-X
hopefully by early 2002 (when i hope to be done customizing my truck), i plan to buy a 3rd gen, and go to driving school.
what i need help on is my choosing of cars.
is there classes in SCCA racing that allow putting an LS1 in a 3rd gen or is a stock-type setup necessary?
if there is a class that allows that,
would a 82-84 SC with a LS1-t56 be lighter than a Z28 with a L98?

Car: 92 Camaro RS
Engine: 350 TPI
Transmission: T5 manual
SCCA's autocross rules are very hard on older cars.
Stock Class allows changing: shocks, tires, cat-back exhaust, plug wires, air cleaner. That's it nothing else in permitted.
Street Prepared adds: suspension changes, any wheel/tire combo, intake manifold up, cat-forward exhaust, plus some other minor changes.
Street Modified allows any street legal V8 car with 4 seats under 6 liters with no forced induction. Engine must come from car's manufacturer. Any thing else goes.
Prepared, I haven't paid allot of attention to this class, but it aimed at dedicated race cars with limits.
Modified, anything goes, and I mean just about anything.
An LS1 3rd Gen would fall in Street Mod.

Stock class rules are very restrictive.
Street Prepared rules allow lots of suspension development and limited engine development. The problem with SP is there are some common mods that are not allowed. Other than intake and exhaust, the engine is stock. Also, some chassis braces are not allowed.
Many common F-body mods will put a car into street mod. This includes cams, some frame braces, stroker kits, engine swaps, etc. But SM has a wide variety of clars and very relaxed rules, so its a fun place to compete.

A 406 would put you in the mod class with vipers and ultra high performance street cars. Of corse not all of these people are the best drivers. You also have to think about setting your car up for really tite corners.

I all depends if you out to really compete or just to have fun pushing your car to its limits.

Get out there and have fun with whatever car you have, then worry about choosing a class and becoming competitive. There was a guy in a club i run with that had a supercharged miata....he was slower than stock miatas because his driving skill was below the ability of his car. IMHO, the best way to learn is in a low power car that handles well(like a VW GTI type of car). Once you master this, then its time to move up. BTW i run an A-mod (175 HP 790 lbs!)
