Ran the 82 Z with the new 383 -finally!!

The first run for the Z28 with the 383 was an 11.78 @ 112 off the trailer. The 1/8 time was a 7.48 @ 91.94 and it pulled a 1.64 60' ft time. The first pass was the best due a starter problem that led to me having to jump the car off and sit with the car running in the staging lane and heating up the engine. The 2 following runs were an 11.80 @ 110.74, and an 11.88 @ 109.62 It was hot all night long, around 84-86 degrees, with our "famous" southern humidity, and a barometric pressure of 29.84, so this run in the spring or late fall would have been at the least 1.5 - 2 tenths better, if not more. The Hyd roller cam pulled hard up to around 6200 RPM then started laying down. The car was already turning 6200 at around 1000' which is the reason for the low 1/4 mile MPH. A set of 28" slicks would definetly help since the 26's are winding out the cam's RPM range so quickly. Overall I was pretty much happy with the "maiden voyage" with the new engine but there is still a lot of time to get out of the car. The gearing, and convertor in the car is really more suitable for either a flat-tappet solid or solid roller, which I am going to install soon ( when I ordered the current cam, I planned on driving the car on the street much more than I do). I am going to max-out the car's capablity with the Hyd Roller though, just to see for myself how fast it will go with a cam that really doesn't use the the engine's full potential. I plan on taking the car back either Wed night or Fri night T-N-T, depending solely on the weather(its been raining here since last Thur) Jeg's replaced the defective Tilton starter, and I installed an electric fan on the car. My biggest question now is, how many 1.64 sec lauches do I have left on the 7.5!!??

P.S. For some reason, when I changed my E mail address on my old Username, my new password was not sent to my new E mail address, and of course, my old password doesn't work anymore, so this is why I'm listed as a junior member, and now have an underscore in my username!!

I looked at the 89 RS on your web site and noticed you did a pretty good job stuffing the rear wheel well with those Convo Pros. What size wheels and tires did you use?

I've got Crane hyd. roller lifters in my big block and they rev to 6800 no porblem. I think they flout around 7000 to 7200. I'm not too big on Crane but I think they have done their homework on the hyd. roller lifters, all my other valve train is Lunati. Give Crane a call and ask them about their lifter and what they're good to. I'm really happy with my Cranes, nobody thought my big block would go past 6500.

So you're saying you have a Lunati camshaft with Crane lifters?? Are they lighter than Comp or other comparable Hyd roller lifters?? I know the Comps are really SLUGS!! they are heavier than stock GM roller lifters. The cam I have is very similiar to the 294XR Xtreme Energy Hyd roller, and its published RPM range is 2800-6100. The only real difference in my cam is that I have a little more lift, and mine is ground on a 112 lobe separation for better compatibilty with NOS. This is what they recommended for a 10:1 CR, with a 3000 convertor and 3.73 gears. Like I said before, I decided half way through building the engine that I wanted a hotter set-up since I bought another Camaro to drive regularly. I have actually had a few suggestions recommending solid roller lifters on the cam, I have heard this works well but have never tried it. The duration is 242 int, 248 exh @ .050", so it should be good for a little better than 6200 RPM.

Quiktrip, They are 8.5 Convos w/ 3" B/S, and 26 X 11.50 ET Streets.

Well, I just returned from Wed night T-N-T and I got 6 more runs on the 7.5. This rearend has probably around 60 runs on it from the previous engine. The car ran very good considering the temp and humidity ( 88* and 75* humidity w/ 29.89 barometic pressure = hell-like conditions!!) to an 11.63 @ 113.25, w/ a 7.39 1/8 @ 93.04, and a 1.626 60' still w/ 26" tires. The best run was w/ 14# air pressure, launching at 2800, and shifting at 6100. I tried shifting sooner, and earlier and w/ this cam 6100 is the sweet spot. Hopefully next time I go, it will be on 28" slicks and maybe on a drier night. I got a few compliments from a few other 3rd Genners that saw the car run. I haven't put exhaust on the car since engine change and most of the guys that saw the car run thought it would be a hulled-out drag only car. They were surprised to see that the car has a full interior, Cd player, and that most everything was still functional, andwere surprised to find out the car was tagged and insured and driven on the street a few times a week. I informed them of thirdgen.org and they seemed interested, and said they'd check us out. On a sadder note, I lost my first race since I put in the 383. I got my A$$ handed to me by a stroked and NOS'd '99 LS1 Z28. I ran an 11.72 @ 112.88 ands he ran a 10.27 @ 133.12 He had one BadA$$ 4th Gen.

I got 28" E/T Drags for the Z today. I also installed Vortex Cone Mufflers (see https://www.thirdgen.org/messgboard/...ML/002021.html for more details) I will not be going to T-N-T this weekend since the "fam" and I are going on vacation to Panama City, FL ( LONG NEEDED, I might add) I hope to go next Wed or Fri depending on this lovely weather we've been having!!

You're running some great times with your new 383. Just makes me want a 383 that much more. Hopefully I'll be getting one this winter.

Thanks James. The 383 is truly a torque monster!! It pulls like a bear to up to the 6100 shift point. I really regret going with the Hyd roller, but maybe its best to go ahead and get the car itself better set-up before I get a big Solid Roller. I going to focus more on suspension now. I have been talking a lot with Steve Spohn, and I plan on getting LCA Relocation Brackets and changing rear springs. I am also
going to move the battery to the back, and lose some more weight from the car. I think with the 28" slicks, some suspension work, losing around 150-200# and some good weather conditions, I can get this car with the engine as it is now to go low 11's. There is so much more potential in this engine now, I just have to get everything dialed in. Then I will start thinking about a change to a solid Roller and NO2. Have you started racing this season yet?? Also, I've been meaning to ask you what kind of Cool Can is that on your car and did it have any measurable effect on performance??

Jamie,
Yea I've had my car to the track a few times this year so far. The track was repaved and has been slick so I haven't been able to do any better than the 13.4 I had at the end of last year. I'm starting to work on my suspension now to help my traction problems. I installed a spohn torque arm and LCA's and I have subframe connectors but haven't gotten them installed yet. I'm also going to get a Moser 12 bolt soon, I'm not taking any chances with my 10 bolt and a 383..lol
My cool can is a Moroso. On very hot days it does seem to make a slight difference. Its usually worth about .05 sec in a 1/4 mile. I mostly just like how it looks and I get a kick out of how everyone always askes me what it is.
