PONTIMANIAC 90

Are the 40s or 45s that could be mounted on the stock 16" rims? I got 245/50/16 now. Thanks in advance.

Well, are you talking wider, or a lower profile? The 245 is the measurement for the width of the tire, so say, a 255/50 would be wider than your 245/50.

As far as tire profile, that would be something like 245/45s, and the tires sidewall would be shorter. I know there are companies that sell tires in that size and shorter. For prices, check out www.tirerack.com, thats the best place Ive found. Hope that helps man!

I always thought that 245 meant how tall the sidewall is.So by putting on a tire with a higher 1st number, like 255 or more, it would make the tire wider accross, right?

255 is the measurement wide, the second is the sidewall and then the speed rating and the rim size. 245/50sr16 is an example.

255/50 16s fill the wheel wells really nice and they don't rub on my buddy's Z28. The wider stance on the 255s have made me decide on those for my car.

Ahhhhhhh, but 255/50's, in theory, would be taller (bigger sidewall) than 245/50's. Reason being is that the first number (245, or 255) is the width of the tire in mm. The second number, 50 in this case, in the height of the sidewall in relation to the width of the tire. 50 means the height of the sidewall is about 50% of the width of the tire. These number aren't exact, though. A 245/50/ZR16 may be 245mm wide, but not necessarily 122.5mm tall.

The tire size 245/50-R16 means that the section width of the tire is 245 mm and the height of the sidewall is 50% of the section width. The R indicates that the tire is a radial tire design and 16 is the rim diameter.

Each manufacturer has a slightly different definition of the section width. Because the sidewall height is dependent upon the actual section width, the diameters of the tires may vary slightly. The way you resolve this is to look at the actual dimensions of the tire when mounted on an actual rim. Each manufacturer should be able to provide you with a brochure that tells you the actual dimensions of the tire when mounted on the optimal rim size. Here's an example to one of Yokohama's charts.

The largest size recommended for your 16x8 rim is a 255/50-R16.
