According to my 1973 Chilton's manual, the 1969 Cleveland 351 had 250 horsepower/355 torque with the 2 barrel.
The 4 barrel engine had 290 hp/385 torque.
Keep in mind these numbers were before they changed to the system used today. To convert (roughly) deduct about 20 to 25%.

still by using the new way of rating hp, the old muscle cars are way over rated. back in the day the measured hp at the flywheel...yeilding higher hp #'s, the 250 hp back hten is only equal to about 200 hp nowadays at the rear wheels. if he has no mods you should be able to beat him. what mods do you have now?

Dangit, here we go again.
First off, Net and Gross hp are both measured at the flywheel. Gross is much higher because it is corrected differently, doesn't have all accessories hooked up, and the engine doesn't usualy have the in-car exhaust (meaning it has headers, or at least a free-er flowing exhaust, etc).
Now, some engines were indeed underrated to start with, when they wanted to advertise the Corvette 396 as having more HP than the Chevelle and Camaro 396s, etc. Or when they wanted to avoid having too much advertised HP per pound of the car (affecting insurance). So some are much stronger than their gross hp level would indicate.
They also ran really high compression, w/ leaded gas. So today most of the older engines aren't putting out very impressive numbers at all. The top dogs were and are still screamers, but your run of the mill mid-level performance cars were/are fairly weak.

yes i agree, my dad had a 68 fastback w/ a 302 pushing the 450 horse envelope.....but he spent $4000 in the driveline alone...and that was back in the 70's-80's....the car hauled *** like nobodys buisness.....but.....in stock trim it is extremely hard to get a 427 w/450 hp to hook up on tires equivalent to 215's-235's. im not talking about gross and net hp, im talking about at the rear wheels....on a dyno the mach 1 would win but on the street i give the edge to the bird.....also take into account the weight factor....they used a lot of steel back then....we have less weight cause of plastics and junk like that.....all taken into account i think the bird will edge out the stang....

Yeah, getting into the faster of the old cars, my father had a 67 SS Camaro w/ the 375hp 396 which he bought brand new. Same engine rated at 425hp in the Vette the year before, and that was rumored to be underrated as well. Stock w/ a set of 8 inch wide "cheater slicks" (drag radials basically, had some tread) he hit some high 12s. W/ headers, some carb tweaking, cold air induction, etc he hit some 12.0s-12.1s. Never ran w/ a proper slick or it would have put a hurtin on the 11s... He put a 427 in it later but never tried a good enough tire, no real improvement since he couldn't keep it on the ground.
Some of em hauled it, but if you ran a stock 67 SS w/ the 350 in it or something similar down the 1/4 today you'd probably cry at the lousy performance...

Is it a stock 4 barrel car? I know they had two 351 one rated at around 250HP and another Around 300HP. I had a 70 with a 351 but it was from a smog late 70's truck with only headers shifted at 4000 rpms. Only ran mid 15's at about 90mph.

Hey, I have a 69 mach1 4sp 4 barrel 351 W I rebuilt the motor pretty much stock (diffrent intake and carb) I also have a 88TA and the mustang will dust it. I think the factory hp specs are way off. You sure it is a cleveland?? didn't think they put them in the mustang till 1970!!
