sealing a "ram air" clone hood?

I have a pos usbody source hood on my car been on there for 10+ years. One day the latch failed busting my windshield and spirit. Few years go buy decide I still dont like any hoods for this car and decide to make it a pin on hood. Now Im debating making a airpan sealed to the underside that would start above the radiator and feed to the carb.

On to the questions.
The car has ran a best mph of 118 (which is lame turd whole other deal) on motor. At those speeds would there be a noticeable difference? I expect the car to run faster now anyways but is it worth the trouble to fab one up?

Any input appreciated.

Re: sealing a "ram air" clone hood?

functioning forward facing scoops are worth HP. i had one on a steel hood a couple years ago. when i put my cowl hood on it, i lost about 2mph. this is mid 120's mph wise. i picked up the 2mph again by going to an hvh super sucker 2" spacer. if it wasn't so ugly, i'd still have that hood on the car. the air pans aren't hard. just use some flat sheet aluminum, bend up the sides perpendicular to the base, then shape those sides to the underside of the hood. put some universal weather stripping on top of the edges and you're done.

i just ordered some "fire resistant foam" from Jegs, cost like $16 for a short roll of it, looks about 3-4ish inches thick, can use it to seal a carb pan, or in my case, im using it on the top of my ram air box im fabbing for my hood.

Re: sealing a "ram air" clone hood?

matt thats pretty much what I had in mine. Id take an extra 2mph! Especially with the mph this dog runs lol.

88 formula hard to tell from your avatar(small) but your hood is close to the same. Id be very interested in see what you are doing as you do it!

As an addition curious if I started with a drop base if this would help aid in smoothing the turbulent air into the carb? May then be able to run an open element on the street under this hood as well?

Make sure your linkage will clear a drop base like that. If i ever get to rebuild mine, I'm going to use an air bell like this

not sure yet, im working on my back half 6 point roll bar and interior. i have a few projects on the car this year, ram air box included. its going to be a pain in the *** since i have to do measurements with the hood closed, make a proto out of cardboard then make it out of sheet metal etc etc.
