Widest tire on Pro star w/ 5.5 bs

Well I picked up a complete set of pro stars today. I ended up with 10" rears with a backspacing of 5.5
Sooo next question what's the widest tire I can tuck? I don't care to massage the inner fenders bc I do not want them sticking outside the fenders.

I'm sure this subject gets repetitive but I'd really appreciate the help so I can purchase tires.

28x10.5 stiff sidewalls.....and you'll have to beat the inner wheelwell a little and probably remove the bumpstops along with roll the fender lip on the quarter panel. A 26x10 et drag probably won't need as much modification.

A 28x10.5 tire is equivalent to what series tire? I'd love to get at least a 295 if not bigger.

Re: Widest tire on Pro star w/ 5.5 bs

I don't see a lot of big metric tires for a 10" rim. Looking at the MT web side, I see;

P275/50R15 which is equivalent to a 26 X 11.50R15 (DOT size) but only need an 8.5 rim. It has a 10.5 wide tread.

There's also a P295/55R15 which is a 28 X 12.50R15 (DOT size) and has a 10.9" wide tread. It will fit on a 8-10.5" wide rim.

DOT size means the width size is the width of the tire section. A drag size is the actual width of the tread. The section width of a drag tire will always be more. A 12.5" wide DOT tire is normally close to a 10.5" wide drag tire.

Pushing a wide tire to 28" tall gets very close to the front of the inner fender. If you stick to a very short 26" tall tire, the width isn't as much of an issue but it's always better to stick the tallest tire possible under the fenders then modify whatever sheetmetal is required to make it wider. Install deeper gears to compensate for the taller tire.

A tall tire has a longer contact patch on the ground. This means any given point on the tire will stay in contact with the ground for a longer period of time. This helps traction better than a short wide tire.

Doing some inner fender modifications, I was able to stuff 29.5 x 10.5 slicks under the fenders on 10" rims with 5.5" of backspacing but that was years ago. My 15" wide rims still have 5.5" of backspacing but the tubbed out back end allows me to still stuff big tires under the fenders

I run the same wheels and have a 28x9 Hoosier slick, didn't need to touch the sheet metal at all. Also, used to run a 26x11.50 Hoosier quick time pro (DOT tire) which fit perfectly fine.

Re: Widest tire on Pro star w/ 5.5 bs

I run the 9x30 Hoosier radial slicks on those same wheels. I have both the 94" and the 92.5" circumference slicks on hand. You will need to roll the upper section of the fender lip and bang in the corner of the inner fender near the front lower section (it will become apparent once you put the wheel & tire on the car). The bump stops can remain in place.
As an aside I ran the M/T 28 x 10.5 bias slicks on this car before going to the radial slicks. Never had a rubbing issue with the front of the wheel opening. I doubt a taller bias slick would clear though. The radial slicks don't grow like the bias ones. On an automatic the radials are actually quicker than the bias e.t. wise. Only problem with using them is if you're still running the original rear due to gear ratio availabiltiy. 4.56's were good with the 28 x 10.5's but the 30 x 9's want a 5.13 for the short ones and 5.38's for the talls in the same engine, trans setup. As the saying goes, your combo may differ.

those mickeys must be a good bit wider than my goodyear radials... i think i measured the USEABLE tread width around 9-9.5" on my 10" wheels.

This car my buddy has is on a 15x10, i think it is a 5.50 BS, there is no modding to the fender lip at all, i was kind of impressed there was no damage to the tire as the car goes low 5s in the 1/8th on a pump gas 400 with 1 kit:

Those are so bad ****, i am getting a set for my car ASAP, they lock in, you hit the back and it pops up and then the lever comes back like a brake handle in our cars and releases from the anchor pin, i fell in love helping him install those, he was nervous with me grinding on his brand new hood, LOL.

They look like crap IMO. If I was going through that hassle of install I'd have dzus fasteners on mine

You are the first, just need to see them in person, otherwise, there is nothing to keep track of and take a split second to unlatch.

And on my black hood, you wont notice them hardly.

they're called "AeroCatch" pins...and they are the cats meow in solid hood retention.

Re: Widest tire on Pro star w/ 5.5 bs

from a functionality standpoint i love them. dzeus fasteners are a big pain in the butt. i actually want to make an aluminum frame to dzeus my hood to which would be hinged to the car.... so it would function like a standard hood and i wouldnt have to remove it from the car after every pass, but could still remove it completely when needed.
