first autocross

Just thought I would share with everyone my first autox exprience. First what I have done to my car, subframe conn., tubular lca, adj. phb, wonder bar, edlebrock stb, lowering springs, kyb gr-2, new poly bushings everywhere, bridgestone g007, 3:42 peg leg, stock motor, stock tranny, ls1 rear brakes. All that put me in STX.

I am the 87 ta, my buddy was in the 89 rs in SM. Wife had dibs on the video camera. I ended up fairly consistant with one freak run that I ruined with some cone kills.

Now the list of stuff to fix before the next time I go, tires as these lost all grip after they heated up, and seats with more support!

Re: first autocross

So....... Are you hooked yet? It is addicting
After my first event I started to get serious. AWD Dodge Stealth twin turbo. By the second event it had fuel system mods and larger turbos, By the third event it had a set of adjustable coilovers and some soft Hoosiers on another set of rims. Now I am having a blast with the Camaro. Unfortunatly the Stealth was faster then the Camaro.

Re: first autocross

I was hooked after the first run! Infact I am still giddy about it Any advice on tire pressures? I had a couple people tell me inflate to max before and work down. What is better for autox more air or less?

Also the longer corners kinda got me, if I pushed it I felt like I was going to flip over, my imagination, prolly because of sliding around in the seat so much.

not my cars, but you catch a glimpse of my silver ta in the pits with the hood up. The track setup was great for what they had to work with.

Big heavy car on street tires? You will probably end up at 40-42 PSI to keep the sidewall from rolling. Out a couple dabs of shoe polish where the tire curves into the sidewall, you will be amazed at how far they roll over.

Re: first autocross

Go to harbor freight and get a temp gun after a run shoot the tire tread in 3 places (inside, middle, and outside) these readings need to be very close to one another. check all 4 tires, once you get the temp readings as close to the same you are at proper inflation and maximum grip.

Yup, That's right around where I was when I was on street tires.
I had more air in the front than the rear to hook up better.
Even with some stiff sidewall Hoosiers, I still used to get a decent amount of sidewall flex as shown here. (skip to 56 sec. mark)
