Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
So i went to the track for my first time and my best run was 14.455 and my highest speed was 98 but most were 96. I was curious if there might be a cheap/ easy way to gain that 4 mph. i was thinking pulling the seats might help but i doubt it'd be that big a difference. i just really want one of those sweet 100mph Club stickers before I join the Navy.

Re: Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
Take your tools out of the back all the loose change out of the astray and get your self to race weight ( take a leak) and now for the seats .two in the back and one up front could come out and give the car a tune up. What was your 60foot time

not spraying it as it has over 230K on the car. cleaned car before I left and didn't have tools, even vacuumed and minimized race weight . had 1/4 tank of gas and no dinner. best 60' was 2.21. Stupid me threw away my time slips at work today

tbh just shed weight first the stuff that doesn't matter. then some stuff that can be put back on after the race is over >.>

If you haven't done them yet, do a search for free mods. These are simple things you can do yourself that dont cost a dime. Like gutted airbox, throttle body coolant bypass.

Have you thought about the spare tire in the back?

Remove the front sway bar once at the track. It will help with you 60' times by allowing more weight transfer and remove front end weight as well. You will be surprised on how much your 60' gains you on the big end.

Ya, you're right. One of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard of. You need to refrain from even thinking of going to the track for a few years, untill you get some common sence. And that was lite comparred to what I was really thinking.

Re: Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
the mustang guys used to put real tires on t-bird/cougar mini spare wheels since they came with nice, minispare sized aluminum wheels that matched the factory wheels.
Heck, put a pair of minispares on the front of your car and drive it around the block, by the time you come back you'll be terrified by the idea. The car won't want to steer, stop...

Re: Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
k so free mods, shed weight, more timing, and skinnies/slicks combo. free mods are already done, next step shed weight. I forgot these cars even had spares. Maybe I'll find a jack while i'm pulling it out and bee able to lift the car and get the sway bar out too. Any tips on launch technique for street tires to help more with the '60? (only raced once so i know mine is bad) also should I run the car warm so it can go into closed loop or keep it cool so it has colder intake air?

Give me a break. You gain next to nothing weight wise with a longer positive cable. If putting the battery in the trunk didn't help then why does every strip car have it mounted in the trunk? Its not just about how much the car weighs, but where the weight is located.

Re: Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
It helps. Alot of strip cars put it there in the trunk to do a couple of things. Makes it easier to wire in a cutoff switch with teh battery real close to the switch. Frees up room in the engine bay for stuff like fuel cells, coolers, and turbos

Re: Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
It does do all that too, but when people originally started to put batteries in the trunk it was for weight transfer. I personally picked up almost .2 back in the early 90's with my radial tired 80 camaro when I put the battery in the trunk.

Re: Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
i'm not gonna be moving the battery as I want this car to retain a bone stock appearance since it's1 of 592 91 B4Cs. since we're on the topic of improving the '60 could i get suggestions on proper launch technique? right now i have 300 tread wear street tires and i always spin them on the launch whether revving it up or gassing from idle. i know there's room for improvement

Re: Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
I got 5mph going from 3.23 gears to 3.73 gears. 88mph to 93mph
It also dropped my ET from 15.7 to 15.2.
This was when the car was an auto.

Re: Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
When I race on a true street radial I will stall it up as much as I can, then on the last yellow I initially just take the foot off the brake and let the car lunge forward only applying as much gas as the tires will allow until I'm at full throttle. Using this technique I was able to cut a 1.7 60' and run an 11.7 @119mph. I never did get to run that car on slicks, but the same motor only with a bent rod in my 84 firebird with same gears and converter on slicks went 1.6 60' and 11.2 @121

Re: Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
If you haven't already done so, convert your airbox into a ram-air set-up. I know on the IROCS it is easy to do. I had to fab up a system on my T/A pulling air from the passenger fog-light opening and picked up 1.23 mph in the quarter and .43 mph in the 1/8. You will see the bigger gain the last 1/8 mile of the track though.
I think there is a tech article for the camaro/irocs.

Ok I finally found the time slips from that night. Please tell me where you think improvements could be made.
R/T: .642 <-I know here but that doesn't factor into the race does it?
60': 2.210

MPH: 75.82
1000: 12.107

MPH: 96.29
I would really appreciate some help if there is an area that looks off. Oddly enough my best MPH was my worst ET. how does that happen?

that 60' looks like you're smokin the tires

Re: Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
Yea, I don't know what kind of tires you are using, but even a " stock " car will benefit from a drag radial. Being consistent is the name of the game.
Also, the R/T totally depends on your reaction. You could let the green stare you in the face, and the clocks wont start till your front tire breaks the beam.
Get your 60' down, with at least a DR.

Re: Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
Traction will drop your sixty foot. But if you want more MPH your gonna need more power. Maybe higher flowing air filters, a cutout, a quick at home port job on the intake, some 1:6 roller rockers. Not sure what your budget is but these things can help add up to what your looking for with trap speed. And like Orr said, get it tuned by someone or learn to tune yourself. There is definately some power to be found here. Good luck.

Re: Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
I say spray it, a 50 or 75shot should do it.
Other than that, go with the tune up, weight loss suggestions.
100lbs is worth 1/10th of a second.
My B-body LT1 is only 260hp, just 15hp more than the last year of the L98 in an F-body. With headers, exhaust, and a CAI its putting me in the 102mph bracket while still pulling 5* timing (datalogged run).
So a 50 or a 75shot would put you right there if your car is already running in peak form.

I'd say you really don't have the power to eek out another 4mph there. With weight loss and traction you could grab a 13 second slip, but the engine doesn't have the power in its current form.

Re: Easiest/cheapest way to gain 4mph?
Hey, I think that a lot of serious and semi serous drag racers have thought about it at one time or another if they ended up with an extra pair of matching ones, but like I said, if you ever put them on the car and tried them you'd forget about the idea right away.
The quart of oil low thing is actually an old school serious drag racers solution also, it prevents any oil from getting whipped up and whipped around by the crank using up some power. With a stock, normal volume pump and an engine with near stock drainback it won't run dry, as a matter of fact, a quart low is the range of the "safe" zone on the dipstick. I wouldn't try road racing it like that, but it will be fine at the dragstrip. Many of us have done it, many, many times.
