Couple noob questions for drag racing

So i'm wanting to take my B4C to my local track when I get a chance but i had a couple questions because their site wasn't very explanatory. First off is a helmet required if you're running close to stock times? Also what do they mean by electronics? I was looking to get into the sportsman class but it says no electronics. Does that mean EFI or ignition boxes or what?

BTW i think there should be a first time to the tack sticky to help us noobs not annoy you old pros so much. I tried searching helmet and got too much garbage, same with electronics

Helmet is normally required if you run 13.99 and quicker. Track rules may require a helmet at all speeds so even the slowest vehicle may need one. You'll have to contact your local track to know what rule will apply. If a helmet is required, it will probably also need to be a Snell rated helmet so just any old helmet won't be good enough.

Electronics means any kind of timing devices used to control the car's ET and reaction time. These are delay boxes and throttle stops. Factory computers are not considered "electronics"

k thanks for that. I couldn't find any info on what that meant on the site. also does the windows not rolling down have any effect on passing tech inspection? I have an old helmet from when I raced go carts that should be properly rated (we had to have 5 point harnesses, arm restraints, helmets, and neck braces) but that was years ago. do the helmets have any age requirements?

Windows must be up while going down the track. There's nothing saying they must roll up and down. My windows are Lexan and rigidly attached.

Yes, helmets do expire. Depending on your track's sanction, the oldest helmet you might be able to use is a Snell 95. A Snell 2000, 2005 or 2010 rated helmet would be better as the Snell 95 is coming to the end of it's life. You can use a M or SA rated helmet and open or closed face. The helmet must have the Snell decal on the inside.

If you do need a helmet, you can pick up an open face, Snell rated helmet at a motorcycle shop for around $100. If the 2010 rated helmet isn't on the shelves yet, it will be soon. You don't need to spend the extra money on a SA rated helmet. A closed face helmet isn't required until you get into the 9 second range.

Re: Couple noob questions for drag racing

If you haven't been to the track before, the best thing to do is go on a "test and tune" or "street grudge/fun" night, snag someone who has been before who can ride in the car and tell you what to do (how to stage properly etc.) and get some practice runs under your belt. Work on cutting a quick light etc. before plopping money down for an actual eliminator bracket class. We often use street night to run test and tune and alot of the guys out there on street night without a lot of experience are cutting like 2.00 - 4.00 (or worse) lights. If you enter a bracket eliminator cutting those kinds of lights your night will be short. You'll have more fun if you get some practice in first.

Re: Couple noob questions for drag racing

yea, don't worry about running a bracket class or anything, just show up for a T&T or Grudge night and run it.

If you bring someone that knows what they're doing, most tracks _require_ that you have a helmet at any speed if they're going to allow a passenger in the car. Even if not, if you can get someone that is familiar with the track to tell you where you need to stop and do what, where/how to stage, the turn arounds... and then watch from the stands for a while that will help.

In most cases, if it's T&T tell the starter that you've never run before and they'll spend a few extra seconds with you getting you in or around the water box and properly staged rather than just waving you on assuming you know what to do.
