First passes of the year with the 401 twin turbo

Well yesterday was the opening day of PRP Pittsburgh Raceway Park. It was unseasonably HOT. Record setting temp day of 86 deg and there was a strong headwind. Maybe 15-20 mph at times? Not the best day for racing but I wanted to see how the car would do with the new mods.

Over winter I replaced the single 4" exhaust to a dual 3" setup. Fixed an oil leak from my turbo feed lines and added a restalled PTC converter. The last one was approximately 5400 stall speed on my tach, and I wanted 4000. The new converter comes in around 4200 rpm so its pretty close to what I had in mind.

I also learned my cooling system sucks. Car overheats easily and doesnt cool down very well. I have a CSR electric pump and griffen rad thats very thick but using stock L98 fans which arent positioned all that close to the rad. Car got up to over 220 deg at some times so i had to let it cool long periods of time before runs. Not sure why but this is another issue to solve

Converter felt good but I still cant brake stall high enough to build boost off the line. With the lower stall speed the turbos did not kick on as fast which is surprising since they are just 60mm units with .68 a/r housings.

My best 60 foot was 1.62 with my worst being 1.72 spinning thru first gear.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7qBCEf7aM2Y

Here are the vids of my passes. I made the first shakedown pass with 10.5 psi. No launch at all, 1.709 60 foot I think it was. Hot air made my winter tune abit rich so i started pulling some fuel. Next I cranked the boost up and I thought it was at 14psi but it was actually at 18.5. Car never was tuned that high and ran pretty rich. 1.66 60 foot and 10.38 at 139 mph.

Next run i took off my air intake tubes/filters and ran open turbo out the hood. Sounds AMAZING. The turbos really scream so much more. Took boost down to 16.5 psi I think but still running a touch rich. This was best pass of the day:

1.628 60
4.326
6.537 at 110.76
8.459
10.089 at 138.67

Last run of the day I added 2.5 deg timing to the table in some spots and pulled abit more fuel. Still pretty rich but felt strong. Car spun all of first just about and still ran 10.17 at 140 in those conditions.

Overall not a bad day but I was really hoping for 9.7's as I thought the car would pick up so much more with the tighter converter and beable to hit some boost on launch with brake stall. Just wouldnt happen. PUshes through the brakes

sounds like its time for a 2 step and a transbrake! can't wait to see how it goes when you get it dialed in a little better

I'm impressed with the stock 10 bolt so far, especially for 2.73 gears

Re: First passes of the year with the 401 twin turbo

Yeah the car loves the 2.73's. Great for highway cruising since this was suppose to be a street car. Once i fix the cooling issues and driveability tune I plan on driving it most anywhere. That was its intent and so far I have some work to do

2.73's really load up the converter and help turbo spool. With 26" tire, i'm near 5000 rpm with no slip at the end of the run. Since i do have some slip its a good gear for the motor. For that boost level I really need 3.08's for my motor but 2.73's are not too far off perfect. This motor doesnt rev that high so no need for alot of gear.

Once I can launch this thing, I hope to see 140 in 9.6-9.7 seconds and once I tune it I'd love to trap 145 and some mid 9's

looks awsome! how much u pay for the converter? and i still cant believe ur doing this with a 10bolt and 2.73 gears lol. wat mods are done to the rear?

u can acutally see the rear wheel gap increase as u load the rear tires, then is squats and goes like a bat ata hell

Re: First passes of the year with the 401 twin turbo

I think the squatting is killing my launch. Need to play with the shock settings again I think. Rear is bone stock out the junkyard. Nothing done to it.

Converter was 900 then another 300 for restall. Expensive purchase but its worth it so far.

looks like to me your rebound settings are too soft causing the rear to lift as u load the rear tires.

dual 3" exhaust sounds good too... almost as good as mine

Looks like you'll be well into the 9s when you get your tune down. VERY NICE!! For a street car, that car IS fast. Congrats on the build. I'd be a tad worried on the rear though.

Have you considered bigger front tires to keep you from pushing through the waterbox? You know more surface contact. Or a linelock?

Re: First passes of the year with the 401 twin turbo

I think my bigger brakes will help alot. My buddy's old turbo LS1 camaro can brake stall 4-5 psi with LS1 brakes. My stockers never were impressive to me but my 99 trans am's brakes feel pretty darn tight. I think the C5 kit will allow me to really low this car up. You can clearly see in the vid, that last pass i crept thru while trying to build up rpms on the converter. Rear end climbed up but brakes couldnt hold.

Maybe something in my tune is off abit because alot of guys tell me i should be seeing boost even at 2800 rpm which is as high as I was able to get with about 40-50% throttle. When I go wide open on throttle, i see 2-3 psi by 2900 so I'm almost there. I do have a pump shot issue that causes some hesitation which delays turbo spool but only for a split second. Maybe i can tune those 2700-2900 rpm areas to get those turbos lighting up sooner? I will have to check my logs again and see what areas i can adjust.

Car has already gone 9.8's at this track in colder air. I am confident this car will FLY once i get those turbos working off the line.

off topic... howd u get to log more than like 919 steps? i cant seem to get more than that with tunerpro RT... its different everytime like 666, then 513, then 919 steps and then it just stops recording. laptop doesnt shut off either.

idk about boost that low. my friends stang doesnt see boost until like 4500 but hes running a vortec supercharger. as far as the hesitiation... u have enough AE? too much timing?

Re: First passes of the year with the 401 twin turbo

I'm not so sure you will do too much better spooling the turbos. Granted mine is a big single, but I can't spool mine on the footbrake at all. On the transbrake and WOT the motor needs to see 3400rpm stall before it builds boost and stalls the converter higher and higher.

I'm just surprised because my buddys stock cubed LS1 with a 82mm single turbo was able to get 4-5 psi on footbrake. Was hoping to do the same.

Re: First passes of the year with the 401 twin turbo

I believe it has to do with the cam in the motor more than anything else. My 305 can spool this 91mm at least as easy as the 385 can. If I advance the cam in the 385 from the 116 ICL to 112 or 108, it will spool the turbo NOW but loose a fair amount of grunt in the upper rpms.

Not sure mine records as long as i want..

My cam is a simple hydraulic roller, 233/233 .564/.564" on a 112 lsa. Installed on a 110 ICL I believe. I had a hard time getting this cam to line up with the cam card. I had to move a tooth over on my timing chain just to get enough advance to bring it in line. Cam guy said maybe the cam was ground slightly off location or the dowel rod location was drilled slightly off ideal location because my timing chain worked fine with my last cam that was done by comp cams. I got to get this back on a dyno to verify my powerband to see if the cam is doing what it should be.

The cam is not huge for a 401, its actually kinda tame. I want to go bigger now to get abit more topend out of the motor but I think i'm abit limited by my heads. This car wants 220cc heads and heavily ported intake to match the flow.

psht put some 235's on it and let it breathe! lol. hmmm i may check my friend's cam as well, its always seemed like its taken a ton of ignition advance to run right, and i've never had a degree wheel on it

Re: First passes of the year with the 401 twin turbo

That 5th gen is my friends car. It has ported LS3/L92 heads, think a ported LS3 intake, texas speed cam, and full exhaust/longtubes. Its got a very rough tune in it and his first time trying to drive the car. On street tires it would just bog or spin, couldnt find a happy medium. Best time that day was 12.8 i think. On my run he went 13.15 at 116mph with a 2.66 60 foot

With tune and better air and good tires/clutch its gonna be a 11 second car at near 120 we think. I hope to run him again then as he also may spray it.

Those 2 other cars in the vid, the red audi and the black volkswagons were pretty quick cars. The black one had almost a 2 second head start on me while I was trying to build boost on the line and I barely caught him. Ran 12.6 at 116 i think? The audi ran somewhere in the mid high 11's at 125mph.

Re: First passes of the year with the 401 twin turbo

It went 141 on 14psi with a loose converter in good air. Now on about 16psi while still running rich, it went 140 spinning all of first gear in hot air conditions in a head wind I think it will do 145 in the fall once i get the tune down more. I bet I have an easy 50whp by leaning it out from 10.8 air fuel to 11.6 or so and giving it a degree or two more of timing.
