Re: 408 lsx hits the track!
im 250.
going to scale it in the next couple of days.
shocks work good. track was a lil off, so i set the front on full loose, and had the back on 3 clicks. tried to move the rear up 4 clicks and the track wouldnt hold it. spun um pretty hard. there was a lightening storm, took out the phones. nobody knew they were running. only a few cars showed up. 20-30 for footbrake and electronics.
here is a thread to some pics for the previous question.

Yes, most everyone is on E10 now. Makes it difficult to read the plugs, you get a greenish tint in the burn. - Although the e10 will cost you a little mileage, that's not where the problem lies. Sounds like they're experiencing some bad refining or something that has sat in a tank somewhere for far too long.
Stage - congrats on the times man. That thing is hauling the mail for sure! - The new interior and cage turned out great man. It's great to see other people who truely improve upon the image of 3rd gens.

Re: 408 lsx hits the track!
how do you find out about the content of the gas? i know i just call the convenience store... LOL.
the green tint is right. is more of a yellow blend, but the color is different for sure.
i might throw a mix of race fuel in and see if the car picks up. this fuel up here is shitty!
weighed the car today on a set of intercomp scales.
3048
raceweight is 3300 on the money.

Re: 408 lsx hits the track!
Most, if not all, fuel at this point is "E10", meaning "up to 10% ethanol". Some sort of government/emissions mandate BS. Really ****s up plug read-ability, but doesn't seem to f* with a wideband much.
I only use Shell or Sunoco gas. Those are the only two that I consistently get good fuel from. I used-to average around 1200 miles per week, now I'm down to around 650. I loose 1-2mpg on the cheapy brand fuels, thus I'm sure their lack of quality hurts performance as well.

hood clearance issues right now. i cant fit a plate with a super victor.
im going to have the intake sent off and put a bar in it.
it will be a bit before i do, but id like to see some 5.90's on a 175-200

Re: 408 lsx hits the track!
clear my foggy memory up but I thought you had a 4" cowl hood? Is it because you're trying to fit the super vic, 4150 carb, nitrous plate and an air cleaner under it? I have tons of clearance under my cowl with a plate, carb, vic jr, and a 6" tall K&N drop base air cleaner that was given to me. I'd have to venture there's a good 4" of room from the carb to the top of the cowl at least. I know the super vic is another 1.8" taller, but that still leaves me some room. Is yours a 3" cowl possibly?

Re: 408 lsx hits the track!
i bought everything used, or at a deal.
the only thing new i purchased was the intake and pistons.
i already had a block, all the gaskets, timing chain, oil pump, head/main studs, etc.
ive got just over 6 grand in it.
i know a lot of these set ups range a lot higher.
buddy did one a couple of years ago, it was an efi setup, but very similar. he had 11 grand in it. all bought new, and he had it built.
i did all my own work.

OK, well, my buddy is doing a 7.3 at 7.3 seconds with a 6.0, STD bore, trucks ported by me(first LS heads i ever ported) Flowed 270 at 600 lift. Vic JR intake, Torqer V2 cam with 3500 stall and 3.42 gears. He has only 3000$ in the motor. So, double that an pick up only 10 MPH makes me glad i am doing a big block. This is in a 79 malibu.

power is power.
doesnt matter if its a "big block" or not.
i ran 6.90 with my STOCK 6.0 shortblock, 3.70 gear, victor jr, blah blah.
i had 2K grand in it.
doesnt matter what you have in it, someone always knows a guy thats done it cheaper. thats fine with me.
im perfectly happy with my outcome, if i spent 6K or 40K on it, it works.

Re: 408 lsx hits the track!
but its not like u have some jy survivor,
youre engine is equipped with premium parts, runs on pump gas, has the capacity to run 9's on a good day n/a.
the heads have excellent resale value, so does the rest of the engine.
if it ever comes time to move the engine for an upgrade, i think a trick flow headed lsx sell pretty quick.

Not trying to be a ashole or anything, i wouldnt be happy going 6/10 faster with a extra 4 k in my ride. Your heads have so much more flow ability, i am just thinking there would be more MPH than my buddies car, extra cubes also, way bigger cam and carb. Just comparing the two by MPH and $ wise, it is hard to swallow i guess.

you have NO IDEA how hard it is to pick up ET and mph once you get to this stage in the game.
this thing will go 9's in the 1/4 in some cool air and maybe even hot air once i get the carb/timing/suspension dialed in.
i can tell you i got to 7.0's 1/8 mile, and it took extensive work for the car to go 6.90's it would have went 80's before i pulled it out, but i was gaining wait as i was taking it out of the car, so i saw no gain.
fwiw my 6.0 did 383whp, the 408 does 510whp thru the auto.
a much slower car could pick up over a second on a 200 shot of nitrous.
im looking at having to spray a 200 to get a 6.0, hopefully a 5.9x.
nothing is hard to swallow for me. i know whats up.

I understand. But yes, i am a "car guy", just seeing so much bigger parts and better i would be looking for 1.5 secs better and 15 MPH. But that is just me. Still flys though. I will be happy trapping over 100 in my 89 once the big block is done. 510 RWHP is about what most 408s put down, but they are usually in a heavier 4th gen. How often will you be driving it on the street?

you won't see 15mph improvement in the 1/8th, that's just crazy. Or a 1.5 second improvement. You're thinking of going slow like 13s dropping to 11.50s possibly. NEVER will you improve that much out of an already stout combo. Your vision of improvements is really really skewed.

A 150 shot on my car changed my 93mph 1/8 to 102 mph. picking up 15mph with a naturally aspirated motor is insane..... no other way to put it

No, i understand that, but price wise you know. The time is there, but i just make 36k a year, so that much more money over my buddies car would hurt my feelings. That is why again i am going with a cheaper big block.

how are you saying mine is hard to swallow when you have a BIG BLOCK thats not gonna run what ive put down??
510hp is NOT common for a 5000+ stall automatic car on slicks, 9" and a stingy dyno.
thats 570-580 with a stick shift car. looking at 625-640 flywheel hp.
my car is 3313 raceweight. there are PLENTY of 4th gen guys that are lighter than me, let me tell you.
i drove it to and from the track today, then cruised it out all sat night.
prolly put 200 miles on her.
get back to me when you get some times out of your big block. it better be a dart 360 headed motor.
still havent had time to play with jetting or timing at the track.

Re: 408 lsx hits the track!
Man don't take it to heart what he's saying. I know EXACTLY what you're talking about and agree with you, these kids on ls1tech see all these high hp dynos with their M6 cars and then when you toss up a big stalled A3 they just don't dyno as well. I've never taken dyno numbers to heart, they're a tuning aid to see if making changes raises or lowers the numbers it spits out. Has basically nothing to do with ET at the track though. Even dyno to dyno can be 40hp or more difference without touching a thing. Now I just toss a wideband into a car and head to the track and skip the dyno all together usually.

Re: 408 lsx hits the track!
your dreaming with the times and mph.
how are you saying mine is hard to swallow when you have a BIG BLOCK thats not gonna run what ive put down??
510hp is NOT common for a 5000+ stall automatic car on slicks, 9" and a stingy dyno.
thats 570-580 with a stick shift car. looking at 625-640 flywheel hp.
my car is 3313 raceweight. there are PLENTY of 4th gen guys that are lighter than me, let me tell you.
i drove it to and from the track today, then cruised it out all sat night.
prolly put 200 miles on her.
get back to me when you get some times out of your big block. it better be a dart 360 headed motor.
still havent had time to play with jetting or timing at the track.
275/60 drag radial
all motor
pump gas

Well, i have several friends(way more than you) with 4th gens, none of them are less than 3300 lbs, they are usually a B4C or 1LE car. The trans ams weigh a **** ton more and the SS are in the middle. My buddies M6 put down 487 with a shitty exhaust system on a 408, put the same motor in a vette and made 526 thru a M6 also and was better exhaust. My big block will not be all that great as i am using the medium port ovals, but it is mock up for the 496 which should blow your times away i would assume, but not by more than 7 mph or so. This is the reason ui went with a BBC, i was going to do a 6.0, but i am glad i didnt. I am done with small block for my 89. What kind of MPH are you getting? Or have you found out yet?
xpndbl3-i pay 1100 a month on my house, and that is just the first bill on the list, i am sure you can imagine.

my mph is posted throughout the thread. you must not be reading the same thing i see. its run 106 mph every 1/8 mile pass ive completed in this car. im sure it would do 130 give or take in the 1/4.
what heads and cam are going on your setup, raceweight, etc?

Re: 408 lsx hits the track!
Man don't take it to heart what he's saying. I know EXACTLY what you're talking about and agree with you, these kids on ls1tech see all these high hp dynos with their M6 cars and then when you toss up a big stalled A3 they just don't dyno as well. I've never taken dyno numbers to heart, they're a tuning aid to see if making changes raises or lowers the numbers it spits out. Has basically nothing to do with ET at the track though. Even dyno to dyno can be 40hp or more difference without touching a thing. Now I just toss a wideband into a car and head to the track and skip the dyno all together usually.
you get to a wall and its hard to climb it.
trying to describe to him how things are, but i think he is stubborn.

IF you feel 4 grand more in that motor wasnt worth the gains then thats fine, but keep that to yourself, there is no real point in bringing that up. Atleast none that I see.
I'll state it again, going from where he was to where he is now on motor is not going to come easy How much of a price can justify the gains you ask? Be it a few hundred bucks or a few grand, the end results is all that matters. I see no problem with what he has done with what he has spent.
im sure it would do 130 give or take in the 1/4

still shots from the camera show the wheels up a lil better.
i have the vid on permanent pause at the 40 second mark.
wheels up a good 20 ft out.

Re: 408 lsx hits the track!
I am sorry, typo, i was meaning MPG.
For the 496, Patriot heads, solid roller with 262/272 @.050 660 lift on a 112 lsa, M6, i figure 3100 LBS, maybe less, 12 bolt with 4.30 gears...ect.
Then to get the even 1000 HP, a 250 shot of gas(probably 2 stage...we will see.
As it sits, you should go 132 in the 1/4, that is just my prediction.
Sorry bud, that response was meant for mw66nova.
