My first dragster

Well I am new to this site and well... I wanna go fast!!! haha I have years of training and never really thought about it til last week buttttt, I want to build a 3rd gen firebird dragster.. I am starting to do all my homework and locate things.

Where do I find a tube chassis I just dont have the tools to weld one or make on so I have to find one.

My plans so far are

Full fiberglass front and doors (found awesome site for that)

454 bored .60 over set up for 8:71 Hoping for about 750-900 hp running on alcohol

As light as I can make it (of course haha)

Ford 9" rear end with 4:56 gears posi

powerglide transmission

So what you think!!! Anything to help I will take the advice.

Thanks, Bill

Halfback with tube k-member and a arms up front.

you want to take a TUBE CHASSIS and THEN do a BACK HALF on it and install TUBULAR K-MEMBER and A-ARMS? i think you have to pick either backhalf+k-member/a-arms or a full tube chassis.

Re: My first dragster

stock style suspension actually works REALLY well on these cars...like so well they haven't really found the limit yet...and takes no fab skills.

Re: My first dragster

I think thats cause if I remember right about 7 yrs ago. I was told that the rear suspenison is a ladder bar type of suspension.. I don't remember to much in between to remember. I had 3 3rd gens. a 89 rs, 91 firebird, and 85 iroc with 305 tpi. The 89 almost became a drag car but I found to much rust now I live in az and don't have that problem. I bought a car in wyoming and pretty much made it my rs. But had to sell it to move to AZ. So watching enough pinks I said enough is enough I'm going to build a car.

It can be cheaper and easier to buy a car already built. www.racingjunk.com has lots of listings.

x2 - especially in this economy.

If you want a full tube chassis with fiberglass nose and doors, don't start with a street car. Buy a chassis and a fiberglass body. You can get a complete 'glass body for under $5k(usuallyl around $3k), which is much less than the headaches/work/$ involved with cutting up a street car to get there, and the finished product will be worth more $ and be a better car.

If you just want a back-half car and can't do the work yourself, then do some research and find a reputable chassis shop within driving reason.

I'd reccomend going with either a factory suspension type car or a back-half car and keep it within the rules for heads-up class racing. You'll have just as much fun with it, and it will have more value.
