Road race thirdgen!! Pics wanted

Re: Road race thirdgen!! Pics wanted
ooooh ooooh, i know the answer to that one!
reliable, consistant throttle response. if you've ever accelerated hard enough for gas to slosh away from the jets you'll know that the bog associated is terrible. yes they make different things to help the situation, but when you start throwing curves into the mix things get even crazier. think about what it would do if you pitched it 30+* around a curve...
efi makes for much more consistant throttle response.

I don't like carbs because they are old, low tech, and lack the precision of EFI. Yeah, the TPI is almost 25 years old now, but much more advanced than a carb. + the reasons Nova mentioned.
Oh, and I went through the pains of adding a VSS to a Jerico trans so my efi would work. I probably am the only person in the world with a VSS on a Jerico

But without it the engine will stall on decel since the ECM adds IAC steps. If it doesn't know that the car is decelerating it can't add that. I adjusted the throttle blades and raised the idle to temporarily compensate and it worked.

Re: Road race thirdgen!! Pics wanted
Pricey? It's the factory TPI system that the car came with. I converted it over to use the 90-92 MAP based 7730 ECM. I have the Moates AutoProm that cost some $. The Edelbrock stuff is harware only and I got it used. I made some modifications to use the GM IAC and wired in the Edelbrock specific TPS sensor.

Plus...010 block, flat tappet, Jerico.....you must admit its got carbureted powerplant written all over it!
I have a 1999 ARCA/Winston Cup Monte Carlo that Im working on getting going for a track day/someday street car and the Jerico is the holy grail of trannies for me.....do you run a street clutch in it??

What region are you planning to run in? Is that a CMC1 or CMC2 class car? Nice build so far. Someday...someday...

Re: Road race thirdgen!! Pics wanted
I'll be running in the SE region. I'm only at HPDE 2 right now. I'm hoping to have my comp license by the end of the season and race in 2011. The car is mostly set up for CMC1 right now. The only exception is the shorty headers that I've fitted to the car. I bought them when I thought CMC was going to be one class and they would be legal. I figure I'll leave it as-is for now and see how the rules shake out over the next year.

I know this sounds sort of bad but I prefer hardcore racing on the road, whether it's city or interstate although I have raced 99% on the highways. I always do it with little to no traffic and slow down if traffic gets heavy. But that's how I like it, dangerous, close & blood pumping fun. I guess I prefer things to be less controlled vs. being on the track where things are seemingly more controlled.

Yeah, thats why i like those road race events with mustangs, porsches, camaro's, cobra's, vipers, vettes, caterhams, just a bunch of misc cars all racing together, now thats racing to me since it is the closest to real life racing as it can get, as you will never meet someone on the road with the same car, setup, suspension, drivetrain, hp limit, tq limit as you would in these controlled events.
Don't get me wrong, I like all motorsports, just more fun when it's everyone and their own daily driving or weekend racing vehicle, not a dedicated track only car. Something about finishing a race and driving straight home in suit and sweat, just says THAT'S RACING.
Oh yeah, and my God does Road racing provide for some of the most baddest booty (Caught for swearing to much) vehicles, and I think I know why, not because they're fast, or have candy paint, or shiny wheels, but these guys are USING THE WHOLE VEHICLE for what its worth, using those shocks, turning that gearbox, HEATING that motor up, fading those brakes out, milking the tires Oooaaahhh, man thats hot. No homo.

Re: Road race thirdgen!! Pics wanted
well i would hate to detour this thread from its original purpose so ill speak my mind once and move on, i too like street racing because there are not so many expensive rules. And the excitement.nothing like showing that kid with daddys corvette,viper,m3 etc what a real car can do when YOU build it and really apretiate it. In turn i hate when some one brings a track car on the street to completely dominate. I like the battle of the street cars. However being the victim of a few street racing accidents. And not trying to be a debbie downer, these would be prevented on a proper course. I like open autocross events so you can compare with any car there. So i may be alittle pansy but that is just my opinion.
But just so you know when im on my yamaha r6 i do like to put those expensive cars in their place lol

Ran '88 from '88 to 94 in SCCA. 1st in class at three consecutive Longest Day 24 hour ract at Nelson Ledges. 2nd overall at 1.5 Hr race at Daytone (first time at the track). Had a great time till SCCA rules got stupid and EXPENSIVE.

Re: Road race thirdgen!! Pics wanted
This has completely made my day haha. I'm into road racing too. Can't wait to have the new setup going and see what she can do. I have a couple questions on tires tho. What's the widest tire I can safely fit on my stock WS6 16" rims? And how wide can I go up front without rubbing? My dad said his '82 z28 rubbed bad with 225's but my old '83 SCCA firebird didn't rub at all with 235's. I'm going with at least 245's up front and I'd like at least 255's in the rear if possible. Thanks for any help

Re: Road race thirdgen!! Pics wanted
The stock 16"x8" wheels came with 245 tires from the factory. You ran 225's?? Wow, that's like a bicycle tire compared to what most on this site even run on the street.

He said WS6 and 16" so that's why I wrote 245's. With the 16"x8" wheel I think the biggest you can go while still having a somewhat small sidewall is 265. I just got confused with his (or her?) dads Z28 being mentioned.

Re: Road race thirdgen!! Pics wanted
So should I try for like some 255/50/16's all around? I just don't want them to rub when I go to park or cut it hard. It is more of a street car/daily driver than anything. Just with a few serious mods to the engine and some suspension massaging. I was planning on getting some BFG G-Force rubber. Seems reasonabley priced for being so wide
#193
Re: Road race thirdgen!! Pics wanted
OE was 8x16 with 245's. Did run some 255/45R16. You might find the 255/50's a bit big but only need a little halp with a hammer in sheet metal above the trailing ar in rear.
Bigger is not always better for real road racing, especially in a limited modification class.

Eh... Not gonna hammer it. Too nice of a car haha. And like I said, it's mainly a fun daily driver right now. I just want some more traction to help put down the new engines power.

A lot of IMSA racers back in the day used V6's in their Irocs because the motors spooled up faster and the car was lighter! If you put a maxed out aluminum V6 in your car..I bet even your autox times would be faster!

Re: Road race thirdgen!! Pics wanted
You're probably right but on larger road courses any mild V8 car with decent chassis, suspension, and brakes will dominate. The V6 would be left in the dust when the course straightens and often times it will struggle to make up the ground in the turns. Dean's Camaro project is/was proof.
