guys who drive to track..NMCA project

ok...ive been through 3 race cars, 6 engines, and 2 trailers in the past 4 years, and im getting tired of the trailer thing.
i want to know who drives their car to the track, races, and drives home...NMCA True Street style.

obviously stock motor guys do, but i run a th350 with 3500 converter, and 4.10 gears, and ill be all motor shooting for 11.50's with a 350. alumium heads, 9.1 compression, and a 240/246 @.050 comp cam.
car is gutted all except carpet and is rewired. about 3300lbs raceweight.

so WHO does it? they used to do it...and i did it in my old 383 '97 trans am.

thanks

Re: guys who drive to track..NMCA project

if i was going to do that, i would probably just go get a engine/trans from the junkyard out of a 2500/3500 truck. 6.0L engine with 4L80 trans can be picked up for $1500 wiring and all. put a cam/converter in it and it would run 11.0-11.50's and be very reliable and get great gas mileage to and from the track.

I have done this a few times just to prove to a few guys around town that I have a "True Street" car. Our track is two hours away and that's driving the speed limit without holding cars up behind me.

Made 32 passes on the car and ran the best of 11.58 @ 118mph with 1.65 60ft. Details are in my signature

I only do this a few times a year and always arranged a way to get my car home if something did happen.

Re: guys who drive to track..NMCA project

see...^^thats what im talking about. i drove my old 383 '97 t/a 3hrs but i had a 4l60e.

i love the th350 trans so im keeping it, and i just like old gen1 style engines better. i may add nitrous to make my goal much easier.
its a 34 mile shot on a 50mph highway...not too bad if my valvesprings, etc are setup right.

Re: guys who drive to track..NMCA project

i drove mine to the track w/ a th350 and 2800 stall just crusin 55 in the right lane. Temp creeped up to about 210-215 but everything was fine. round trip was about 95miles including the 4 passes down the track and i even got 10.5 mpg on that tank.

Re: guys who drive to track..NMCA project

Same cam 3500 stall, th350 and 4.10's as you. I drive it to the track and all over the place. (I built this car to drive it, not trailer it.) When the carb and ignition system is dialed in correctly the fuel mileage is not bad at all. For the "240/246 comp cam", lock out the mechanical advance (34-36deg full time) and fine tune the vacuum advance to get approx 10-15deg of addtional spark advance at hiway cruise. (Crane adjustable vac advance)
You must have the proper air ducting, air baffles chin spoiler HD clutch fan and fan shrouding on the radiator to ensure proper cooling system airflow at speed.
These cars are "bottom breathers". If you don';t have all the airflow ducting for the radiator it will run hot on the hyway.
Get a add on transmission fluid cooler and mount it in front of the rad so it gets good airflow.
What model carb will you be using? A simple, afforable narrow band O2sensor/ AFR meter is a big help in dialing in the carb AFR (jetting and air bleeds) at idle and cruise. Approx 14.7:1 AFR at cruise. Getting the carb and ignition dialed in for cruising is the key to easy cruising fuel mileage to the track and home. It will not run hot once dial in right.
At the track I make no changes other than adding air to the rear air bags and bolting on the ET streets. (16PSI). I don't need to open the hood or uncork the exhaust. "Street trim" is race trim on this car. It's all ready set up.

It's about a 50 minute drive to the track.

You could even tow a motorcycle camper/trailer-support vehicle behind your car for weekend camping/racing.

Re: guys who drive to track..NMCA project

there is a somewhat local '05 gto with a procharger and 4l80e trans that runs mid-high 9's at 149mph... drove that car 4 hours to rockingham, changed his tires, busted off a few 9 second passes and then drove it 4 hours back home in a comfy car with a/c. i thought that was pretty awesome.

Re: guys who drive to track..NMCA project

Not only do I drive my car to the track (about 65 miles round trip, but don't do a damn thing additional to race it... No tires, no race gas, no dropping air pressure, no cooling down...

I'm of the mind that unless the track is more than 150 miles away from your home, you should be able to drive it there. If not it better run very fast - single digits....

Re: guys who drive to track..NMCA project

I currently daily drive my 4th Gen, and drive it to and from the track. Last weekend I drove it 2 hours each way to BMP for a track rental. I get about 16-17 MPG city, 20-ish mostly highway - some mixed driving. The car runs cool in traffic, and has great street manners. I drop 4 psi in my rear tires, and loosen up my front shocks all the way at the track - no other changes.

I wouldn't have it any other way, I don't have the space or budget to justify a trailer car.

haha..yea i still run the 10bolt with aubrun posi and 4.10's. im thinking about putting a milder cam in it so i can put like a 29" tire on the rear to lower my cruise rpm, and spray it to use up the tire on the top end!!

great input, thanks guys.

f bird...i run an old barry grant modded holley. the one from the mid 90's before the demon line.

So do you actually race or are you just a test and tuner?

If your a racer, how is not doing the trailer thing even an inkling in your mind? you've seen enough bad things happen, know things can happen at anytime so why go through the headache of trying to line up a ride home and a way to get your car home, inconveincing soembody else for your sake of trying to be cool and say, hey, i drove to the track...who gives a rats azz, in today's world, unless your going ubber fast in the 8-9 second range, saying you drive to the track is old news my freind...take a look around, today's 10 second cars are 5 years ago 12 second cars. And now your saying your still running the stock diff and want to spray?? yeah..definately trailer out until you install bullet proof drivetrain parts, which even then does'nt mean squat since anything can happen at anytime.

So for sake of your freinds who would rather be doing something else than carting a trailer out to pick you up in the event of failure, keep trailing, your freinds and family will thank you for it. If your just a test and tuner that does'nt race every weekend all season, then do whatcha like.

haha...i like your attitiude^^ thing is...i race 2-3 times a month in the summit et series, and run the street car shootouts. i just wanted to do it a couple times before the nmca race at maple grove in june...that way i knew id make the true street drive.
ill trailer most of the time, but id like to be able to make the drive up once in a while. i havent driven a car to the track in years.

youre 100% right that anything can happen...and ive broken pretty much everything in an engine...like i said, its only a few times ill drive it up, but i wanted to know if anybody with modded cars drive them.
thanks IHI...im excited to hear how you do in 2009.

Hopefully better LOL!! Always good for winning money and typically going to final 4 and then things fall apart. I do have some things i want to do to the car before this season to make it deadlier and help me in the R/T department..need to keep the front end down, so i'll be back to figuring out a nice functional front end limiter, if that dont work, wheelie bars as gay as that will be on a slow car

Re: guys who drive to track..NMCA project

well IHI...limiters will hopefully solve some of your problems!!

ross...luckily enough true street is a broad class, because i cant hang with evryone in speed/power...

ive learned to utilize setups over engines...i made a 380flywheel hp 355 go 12.000@114.2 (BONE stock suspension) in converter/gear/weight, etc.

i think im going to shoot for something similar, but with aluminum heads, trunkmount battery, upgraded suspension, etc...see if i can make an 11.50 index motor car.

its either $2500 for a trailer or 12bolt...havent decided which yet. :-0

similar, you're trying to be closest average to 9 10 11 12 13 14 or 15 seconds. have about a 30 minute drive then you come back and there's closed hood between passes. no changing bottles or icing intercoolers. so close to index racing

yea i didnt think about that when i set my 11.50 motor goal. i was thinking of spraying a 75 shot into the 11.0s...but i think im gonna rethink the setup.i ran 12.00 indexs last year, and wanted to step it up...but id have to make a big leap for 11.0's n/a.index racing is fun, but ive always done brackets mostly for the ease of not having to worry about the number, just staying on it.
