Drag Tire Question

Hello,

I'm looking for some advice on upgrading my wheel & tire set-up on my '83 Z
for strip use. I'm looking at a set of Weld Draglites 15" x 10" / 5.5"
backspacing w/ Hoosier Quick Time Pros 26" x 11.50" to replace the Iroc
wheels with 255 / 50 / 16 BFG Drag Radials that I currently have. I checked
the specs on the Hoosiers and it appears with a 11" section width and 10"
tread width that they aren't a whole lot bigger that the BFG's I'm running
now. Anyone on here ever run this size Hoosier? Can I expect these tires
to fit without any modifications? I searched and didn't find any info on this
particular tire.

Also, given my set-up, would I be better off going to a taller tire? I'm pushing
6500 rpm at the finish line in the 1/4 with 4.11 gears in a Moser 9" rear.
Drivetrain is a 400 sb with a roller cam / forged internals / Turbo 350.
Would a 28" tall tire be beneficial? Best 60' with the BFG's is a 1.86 with a
stock rear suspension other than Spohn lower control arms and panhard
bar.

Any advice you veteran racers could provide would be greatly appreciated...

Re: Drag Tire Question

I have never tried that tire, I know a bfg 275 60 15 fits on an 8 inch wheel with 4.5 bs no problem. It apears that the hoosier is a little smaller, but bias plys are measured a little different, maybe someone else will chime in.

Re: Drag Tire Question

I used to run the same Hoosier tire and wheel combo, it'll fit with zero problems. I changed to their 28x9 slick tire which has about the same section width and have had good luck with them. My quicktime pros were old and only could manage 1.8x 60 foots at best. Soon as I tried a bit of nitrous, they just spun really bad. My now, I think 3 year old 28x9 slicks just put down a new best of 1.42 60' on the nitrous the last time I was out.

Re: Drag Tire Question

ive ran that tire on my 9" wide draglite with 5.5 BS with no issues. The actual section width will be a hair bigger mounted on a 10" wide wheel but it's small enough to where i wouldn't worry about it, especially because the backspacing is the same. I don't remember if the wheel wells needed a lil hammering or not to fit those short tires but that is all it'll take if you get any rubbing. 10" wide wheels with 5.5 BS tuck kinda nasty tho imo, down the road im going to be purchasing a second set of wheels/tires so i can change tire heights quickly depending on what type of pass i want to make. Be it nitrous or motor. They'll more than likely be 10" wide too but with 6.5" backspacing...that'll be fun to fit. Good luck, have fun.
