Is this a 12 sec. car?
Got into an arguement with my cousins buddy the other day over whether
or not his car should run 12`s.His car is a 90 iroc conv.Full wieght car except
weld drag lites and the aluminum heads(corvette L98).He has a hot cam,
long tube headers,3.73`s and an rpm air gap/750dp.The car ran 13.72@100.99mph when it was still tpi.He thinks he is going to drop 3/4 of a sec.
just by switching to carb.I told he probably gained 30hp and lost 30 lbs/ft tq.
and he`ll probably run the same e.t. or a bit quicker but gain a few mph`s.
He got all pissed off and started talking crap about how he is going to own
me at the track (my car runs 13.5-13.7).We are going to find out in a couple of weeks but I just wanted to hear some opinions.

Re: Is this a 12 sec. car?
depends on the weather but that car if tuned right will be significantly faster than stock TPI on it
i bet 13.2's in same conditions at 105mph, but if he can launch good and the air is good, then it has potential to touch 12's easily
i was there with a bit lighter car but stock bolt on L98 with stealth ram up top. sealevel air conditions tho, but i gained about .4 tenths over stock TPI on average i think

Thanks for the quick response.I`m really shocked that a 350 with a mild cam
carb/intake and headers would be that quick.I`ve always considered 12`s
to be very quick for a full wieght small block on street tires.

Re: Is this a 12 sec. car?
hotcam isnt all that mild in a 350. its a pretty capable cam that has a proven 12 second track record
convertible is a heavier car so it will have to hook up good on drag radials to really run 12's

It will be difficult to go 12's on street tires. I trap a couple more mph(107-108) and go 12.7's on street tires but my car hooks freakishly good on them.

13.4 @ 102 w/ 1.89 60'
350 Vortec heads
9.97:1 Static CR measured
218* @ 050" ........484" lift w/ 1.6 pro magnum rockers
RPM Air Gap
600 vac Holley
Shorty headers with Flowmaster cat back
3700+ lbs race weight
700R4 w/ 3000+/- stall convertor
3.73 rear gear
26" drag radials
Changed to a TCI Street Fighter convertor w/ 3500 stall and an XR276HR cam. Added LT headers and eliminated the cat with a y-pipe. Only had time to make one pass. Went 13.2 @ 100 shifting automatically (around 5000. Even went through the traps in OD at 3500).
12's should be easy with this combo.

His car is too heavy (probably 3800) and is making maybe 335hp on a good day - being generous, not enough to consistently get into the 12's.

And ...does he have a roll bar?
If not they wouldn't let him make more than one run.
I smell naws here.

Yep I think he sprayed you. 15 mph is a lot to pick up. And at that mph he should run an 11 sec pass 11.50 to 11.80s

Re: Is this a 12 sec. car?
I really don`t think he was spraying it.It is a small chevy with alluminum
center bolt valve covers and an edelbrock dual plane intake. They claim thats
all.Long tube headers and a small roller (not the hot cam that I thought).I
say if it was that easy every car I ever owned would have run 11`s....By
the way race wieght was 3420lbs.

To go from 100 mph to 115 mph at 3450 lbs you will need 125-150 hp gain..I do not think going from fuel inj to a carb is going to give you that kind of a gain.

My TPI car is faster than skinnyz's carb car, and we have similar mods (no offense, just an example)

Re: Is this a 12 sec. car?
Not with respect to tuning but the ability to offer equal performance at the drag strip. I'm not talking about the ultra sophitiscated but say two identically prepared engines in the 400hp range with different induction. Allowances for EFI friendly cam profiles aside, build the engines the same and I think you'll find track or dyno results very similar.
----------
Of course a poorly tuned EFI will be outperformed by a well tuned carb and vice versa.

Depends on the traction at the starting line, but usually 3000-4000 rpms, and I use mickey thompson 26" ET Streets.
