Why does my car hook so good on street tires?

Seriously, I get CONSISTENT 1.8 60's. I made 3 runs tonight, first was after an oil down and I spun, they sprayed the track shortly after that and the 2nd and 3rd runs were 1.885 and 1.884 both being 12.754 ET's. I have no explanation, the tires are cheapo riken raptors and the suspension is 100% stock except for SFC's, they seem to like 26 psi and a long burnout. So far I've only been able to get 1.7's with the DR's.

I'm not complaining, just curious if anyone has an idea.

1.8 isn't exactly flying for a 60' but congrats I guess. Sounds like you don't have enough power to blow through them at the track. If you're peddling it then you'd go faster with slicks anyways.

I know, I could blow them off easily with a little more throttle or put the DR's that are in the garage on but I guess I'm trying to delay the 10 bolt explosion.

The thing is every one else thinks 1.8 IS flying on street tires, especially with my best being a 1.7. It's dead hooking BTW.

my best ever on a street tire was a 1.89, but i was usually 2.0 all the time. MT streets are 1.7's.. You must have a sticky track!

Re: Why does my car hook so good on street tires?

I have an 89 RS with a 305 TBI that sticks with street tires.
They are a little wider then stock. Not sure what size they were on when I bought them. I spun once out of 4 passes, but like your pass the track was oiled.
I think I was running 30 or 35 psi.
I just need to change the tranny so I can get into second with the clutch.
Don't know what my 60 ft time was either.
I was just having fun. I was between 17 something and a best 16.2
But like I said I can't get into second without slowing down.

I'm tempted to put a small shot on it and go for an 11sec street tire pass. Hit it after I'm moving...

That spray they put down is amazing stuff wish my track wasn't so broke and could afford some of that VHT on the street night drags.

Re: Why does my car hook so good on street tires?

When i first started bracket racing i had the stock 305 4 barrel and a set of mastercraft 235/60-15's. common 1.84 60's when the air was good, 1.86-1.88 during typical summer air. Ran them at 18psi with big burnouts.

Glad it's working for ya, but nothing extra special yet sorry for the brutal honesty. regardless, that is good times for a street radial..and yes, these cars work. mines still stock suspended aside from a few compnent changes shocks/struts and has gone 1.33 with the rear tires and a 9" slick with a shot of laughing gas.

Honesty is a good thing, I wish more people would be as honest. It's not too special, but it's pretty quick around these parts. Most Everyone around here has "a bad F***in mud truck!" that will smoke me. It's shown a few LS1 cars what's what too.at the race track of course

Re: Why does my car hook so good on street tires?

The whole key, even if your sheeot is'nt fast is making it hook. Even on the street as mine sits now, i may get a full rotation and then she grabs just like she's on the track, so the few little street encounters with guys i race with, i've never been beat stoplight to stop light, even when i was running 13's against their 10 second rides...my junk has always hooked and gone, so traction more than makes up for hp, in just about every case too unless ya got a looong run, then the higher hp guys will eventually catch you, but for all practical purposes, you can usually be far enough ahead that once they start catching you, the confrontation is about over anyhow LOL!!!

getcha some stickies, and then really be mesmorised by the hook

Already got some, I'm just amazed how well these hard as hell tires grab. On the DR's it's about .3-.4 faster in the 1/4, it feels like someone ran into me from behind on the launch, then about 10' out it dies, almost like I got out of it completely, after it clears out it goes. After all that happens it's a 1.7ish 60'. I think it's fuel sloshing out of the vents.

Re: Why does my car hook so good on street tires?

Depending on the weight of the car the 10 bolt will hold up for quite a while, I'm going 1.685 to the 60's and the rear is still looking in good shape. I know there is atleast one person on here that was running into the 10's on a 10 bolt.

With my car being on an EXTREME diet, it helps to make the 10 bolt live a little longer, I am planning on being 1.55 before I put a 9" under the car. As long as you are smooth with the power and not shocking it real hard our rear-ends will hold up to some punishment. Not forever, but long enough to get a good rearend in the budget.

Re: Why does my car hook so good on street tires?

It needs a new set of gears, the 3.73's in it now are from a 150k mile blazer. They whine a bit.

The car weighs 3200 with me in it and 1/2 tank of gas.

Re: Why does my car hook so good on street tires?

Good luck on a 10 bolt lasting… at this point I’ve blown up 7 ten bolts and a 9 bolt BW rear, and none of them have been in anything _that_ fast.

As far as 1.8’s on radials… yea, that’s about what these cars run when you get it right. I was running mid 1.8’s with something like 16y/o original goodyears on my L98 formula. To go much faster you generally need gears and a converter or a stick, or more power.
