1st time at the track with the new engine, sucked!

Well made it out to the track and got whooped on by everything out there. This is a first, 3 of the 100 or so running were slower. The best was the 1st 16.316@85.64. The rest went down hill with a worst of 20.00 with a huge bog off the line MPH was still 80 but just seemed like i'd loose power on the top end of each gear but It pulled real strong all the way to 5200 which is in the cams power band and just happens to be where the car shifts when left in drive.

Did see a turbo'd 3rd gen running 12's which was kinda cool

Sounds like a fuel starvation problem

Yea the turbo'd 3rd gen was running dialed way back because they changed our rules on cages since the track is under new management I dident get to talk too much to the guy that owns the car kinda an ****.

The cam is a fairly mild one I traded a used comp 270H for it in the box.
Crower #00915
1200-5200 RPM Range
258/264 Adv. Duration
414/417 Gross Lift

Yea generic specs I cant find the cam card.

Yea it is a small street cam for mileage but still shouldent be that slow IMO. I played with the fuel pressure at the track since this edelcrap needs a regulator. When I increased pressure the bog got worse and I got the 20 second run but MPH was up. Heres a link if it works of one run.

Re: 1st time at the track with the new engine, sucked!

Carburetors doesn't like more than 7PSI max and it must be maintained through all operating ranges and conditions. With no regulator, pressure can be anywhere unless the pump is self regulating such as a Holley red. If the float bowl is emptying as you go down the track and the fuel pump can't supply enough fuel for whatever reason, the engine starves. Could be a bad pump, restricted fuel line/filter or even something wrong with the carb.

Can you see the pressure while going down the track? Under load it will tell you if it can maintain enough pressure. Having 7PSI at idle doesn't mean it can maintain that at WOT for 15 seconds.

It's unlikely but I'd suggest pulling your rocker covers and inspecting the valve springs. Your cam isn't big enough to cause damage but with the valves closed, see how much pressure it takes to open the valve. Good factory springs should have around 80 pounds of seat pressure and take a fair amount of effort to push open. If any open easily, you need new valve springs.

You can try a different carb and eliminate if it's a carb problem.

Trying to ask what's wrong with your car is as bad as phoning a doctor and saying "It hurts when I do this". All we can do is offer suggestions based on info we get.

Actually, at the altitude you race at, you should be leaning it down. Less air to burn means less fuel is needed.

Re: 1st time at the track with the new engine, sucked!

For those in the thread thinking his car is really slow, look at his location. The average DA there is 5500' +. His car at sea level would be a good amount faster. However, still sounds like you have some bugs to work out. G/L!
