yes but it currently has flat tappet lifters and cam cause i bought the long block assembled and thats how it was. later i plan on swapping to some aluminum heads and a rollercam and lifter set that'll really wake her up but this is my first motor and it wanna start out easy.

Re: The T/A's new heart

Carb is a little on the big side. Most vortec setups with 650DP's run high to mid 12's with such parts mentioned depending on tune and driver. Sounds like a good combo though if certain areas are addressed.

Re: The T/A's new heart

with some ET streets that thing oughta go LOW 12's.
- Carb is FINE!
Get an X-pipe set up on there and it will make some good power. Fab up some sort of cold air too.

Re: The T/A's new heart

if i were you, i'd yank that cam/lifters back out and sell them before you run the motor. will get more money.
get a stock set of roller lifters and a roller cam your happy with.

Re: The T/A's new heart

have the guides on the heads been milled for clearance to run bigger lift?

the combo that you have right now has been known to go into the upper 11's once setup correctly.

Re: The T/A's new heart

the heads have been machined for bigger springs and i wanted to go with the bigger carb so i dont have to upgrade carbs later. i do have a true dual setup i bought off of smokin87ta im goin to run and an x pipe i gotta fab into it. thanks for all the replies guys my goals with the motor was to do high 12's on street rubber and mid- low 12's on drag radials and beat my friends 94 cobra haha

Re: The T/A's new heart

I have a question. Are those the vortec heads in the picture? I thought that vortecs had three triangles in the front of the head. If those are the vortecs could you give me the cast number please.

About the motor, i have a similar setup and im in the tunning process with it now. Trying to tune a 750 VS carb on it and i can tell you the motor would do better with your choice of carb (Mech. sec.). I did some shake downs passes with a 1800-2000 stall and shifted at a low 4500 RPM with a VooDoo 268 cam and pulled a 14.0 @ 102 w/ a horrible 2.2 60'. So with a similar set up good traction and shifting at correct RPM i would expect some 12's. Oh yea on my pass i didnt even get to tune it, so put the carb on the motor set base timing and drove.

Re: The T/A's new heart

I would definitely put in a hydraulic roller, you will be so much happier, and it's a lot more piece of mind. with a bone stock vortec motor in my car i run about 8.3 at 83 mph i believe. the GMPP hot cam is an excellent choice if its a street car still, or the XR288 is an awesome grind if you want a more serious idle. Just be careful of retainer to seal clearance
