Looking For A Flexplate/Trans Shield

And yes I did a search, only thing I could come up with was that the TCI ones don't fit well at all. So I finally got around to picking up an auto, th350, and ofcourse that means buying some safety stuff. I was looking into either getting the CSR Transmission/Flexplate Super Shield OR getting a JW Ultra Bell and then finding a trans shield through some other company.

So curious onto what everybody is using and who likes or dislikes what and how big of a PITA everything is blah blah blah.

Thanks guys
-Rex

Re: Looking For A Flexplate/Trans Shield

I use a TCI tranny shield and a CSI/CSR flexplate shield.

An Ultrabell would be nice but you still need a tranny shield unless you buy an SFI case also. The Ultrabell and/or case still needs to be recertified every 5 years.

You can get a one piece tranny/flexplate shield for all the common trannys. They're not cheap but are cheaper than buying an SFI case and bellhousing.

Re: Looking For A Flexplate/Trans Shield

They hold in heat and retain oil if they get wet.

I watched a ProMod car destroy a transmission a few years ago. Transmission blew up on the starting line. A clutch hub went through the tranny case, through the Kevlar blanket, through the floor, off the passenger side door bar, through the door blowing out the side window then sailed about 300 feet over the grandstand. The exploding transmission sprayed oil all over the inside of the car.

The Kevlar blanket didn't help. I doubt a solid shield wouldn't have done much better.

Re: Looking For A Flexplate/Trans Shield

I have TCI one that is molded around the transmission. It fits great. I have even taken the tranmission out the bottom of the car with this on. One suggestion would be to drill two hole on the drivers side to get the two bolts out as they are a tight fit with the bolt length they give you. The other non molded typed will make you cut up your floor to get it to fit. I am surprised those are still used.

Re: Looking For A Flexplate/Trans Shield

I've already cut and modified my tranny tunnel and firewall but mainly because I have my engine pushed back and needed more room to access the bellhousing bolts. This winter I want to cut out the tranny tunnel and fabricate an aluminum removable tunnel just to get better access for tranny removal.

When my SFI shields expire, I'll probably upgrade to a one piece shield.

Re: Looking For A Flexplate/Trans Shield

I've got the TCI flexplate shield, it was a minor PITA had to cut up the tunnel where it transitions to the floorpan, while I was at it i drilled the holes for the other trans bolts. Works good now, but in hindsight I wish I had went another way, or cut out the tunnel back to the brace and installed a aluminum piece with DZUS fasteners. (which may still be a winter project).

Re: Looking For A Flexplate/Trans Shield

The more expensive contoured flexplate shield like CSI/CSR fits better than the typical flat plate type shield because of tranny tunnel clearance but isn't any easier to install.

Cutting out the tunnel and fabricating a removable aluminum tunnel may be one of my winter projects also.
