Best ET gain - Cam vs Catback
I'm in the low 14sec zone (mid 90's mph) with my 3300lb IROC w/L98, T700, 2.77's (soon 3.42's), flowtech shorties. I have a cutout installed after the cat (opposite the fuel filter).
Which will i see a better ET gain from? A suitable cam (compatible with stock pcm & chip, and re-used roller lifters), or 3" (single cat) catback system?
Im hoping to be in the very high 13 sec zone... (especially after the 3.42's are in)
Thanks!

Re: Best ET gain - Cam vs Catback
Ok, the cam sounds like it might be better to fatten up that torque curve.
Although i have the cutout towards the end of the 2 1/2" exhaust, it probably doesnt matter much on my close-to-stock IROC (the stock exhaust probably isnt much of a restriction at the moment). A cam (before new gears) would see what kind of improvement? a few tenths max?

Re: Best ET gain - Cam vs Catback
i'd say good catback will get good gains.. you already got shorties so need the rest of the exhaust to complement it. any small cam that will work well with the computer as is and complement TPI will make probly the same gain as the catback or maybe a tad more. the stock stuff really restrictive.
cams really could benefit from a tune. my stock motor needed a abit of a tune with just 1.6 rockers/intake manifold to fully shine. alot can be gained out of a stock L98 with a tune. once you add a cam to a catback/headers car tho, the gains will be more impressive.
plus exhaust sounds good and is easier to do.
but if you moved that cutout up near the ypipe, you could see good gains with a cam.
EITHER mods tho will get you 13's.. you should be there as is.
my suggestion is a set of drag radials and a tq converter in the trans for mid high 13's consistantly. better gain from those than any cam/exhaust gains

By 'tune' do you mean fiddling with the prom/chip?

IMHO - a cat back is pointless if you have a cut out. Regardless of where the cut out is placed. The exhaust gasses will find the least path of resistance.
I know it wasn't listed as an option, but my vote would have to be for a better torque converter. I feel it will be your best bang for the buck... provided you have traction.

Re: Best ET gain - Cam vs Catback
Yeah sounds like the cam might be the go, as i already have the cutout. might move it to before the cat though to maximise its benefit.
I heard on here somewhere that the Crane Compucam 2032 is prob one of the biggest you can get away with , with stock chip.
Is it worth paying the extra cash for a decent chip, and slightly bigger cam, or i'm thinking leave the chip and put the $ towards a converter....

Re: Best ET gain - Cam vs Catback
depends on the goals for the car? do you just want to run a 13 second run on drag radials/slicks and converter? or do you want to do it on street tires in street trim like how you drive everyday?
converter and drag radials should give you good gain. converter only will give u a good gain. cam will give you a decent gain as well and yes its worth it to get a slightly bigger cam and chip for that cam. most mild cams wont need a whole lot of tuning. the WOT they can get pretty good with mail order i'd say but part throttle is hard to get.
I know lsracing chips has done work with the hotcam and HSR on L98's. they probly could set you up with a nice hotcam TPI tune but hotcam is on verge of being a big cam for TPI

What do you mean when u refer to mail order & part throttle hard to get?

Re: Best ET gain - Cam vs Catback
mail order tune is just what it implys.... you go to a online chip selling site and tell them what you have and they burn a chip with NO direct input from your motor.
getting the part throttle aka cruising tune down is harder to do by mail order since you really need to see exactly what the motor is doing and make the necessary changes

Re: Best ET gain - Cam vs Catback
Yeah, i cant wait to get the gears.I'm now considering getting a borderline biggish cam and then getting the setup so i can burn proms instead of paying good money for a less-than-optimal jet or hypertech.
Gears, cam and tune. Nice.

Re: Best ET gain - Cam vs Catback
Ok, just ordered a Crane Powermax/Compucam 2032 cam from Summit (112LSA, Lift 452/465 w/1.5s and 270/276 Adv duration).
Crane on their website recommended a AFPR.. Why? Possible lean conditions or something?
