Those running a Vacuum Canister / Reservoir

My cam specs at 262/266@.050, .665/.625, 106 LSA.

I would like to get my power brakes functioning better, anyone here running a vacuum canister? Where'd you mount it and how well does it work?

Re: Those running a Vacuum Canister / Reservoir

Works awesome. At start up, just let it sit for a bit. I push the brakes in at first as well to make sure it fills up. You get about 5 solid presses before the pedal starts to feel soft so watch yourself on the street and give yourself room. Seems I only had 1 old "good" pic out of a million engine shots lol. If you need a better pic I can always take some more of how it's mounted etc.

Re: Those running a Vacuum Canister / Reservoir

Ill try to find a pic of mine or ger one. Mine is basically the same spot as Demons, but its lying sideways. Mount studs go through the tray where the CharcoalCanister used to be in that spot and bolt in from underneath. Mine is a Crane. It has a port for a gague but not one in it yet. My cam is .488/.510 with 1.5s and I have 1.6s, 234/244, 112LS, 107 IC . Seems to work good, but the HydroBoost would be better IMO.

Re: Those running a Vacuum Canister / Reservoir

When i used to run one with my old 388 i located mine exactly like demon355 did and it worked awesome. Inital start up brakes were hard and did'nt work, so you had to give it some gas to build vacuum up quicker, but once i got on the road brakes performed just like factory, could'nt have been happier.

Once i finally switched to manual brakes i tried the set up on two other cars i raced of buddies and it did not do a darn thing to help their brakes at all...they still had rock hard pedal and crappey stopping/holding power, so i was suprised at that, never imagined it would never do anything at all, i at least expected a tiny bit of better brakes, but it did'nt happen.

i dont know your current situtation, but i knew when i went with a bigger mill, trying for pwr brakes would be like saving a snowball in hell, it would be tough. Called strange, installed their manual brake M/C and the results are exactly what i was after when i wanted to go manual. I have driven alot of cars over the years with manual brakes and they were all spongey with crappey brake feel and performance. I drove a freinds race car with manual and it was every bit as potent as a pwr brake set-up so i knew great manual brakes were possible and i set the bar high for myself, luckily i got exactly what i was after...pwr brake feel without the booster and associated BS getting in the way. Where your at cam wise, i think you might start looking into that, or as fivekid stated a hydroboost system like the big trucks use...basically runs off the ps pump.

they do sell quite a few aftermarket brake systems like this now for around the $500 mark if you must have pwr brakes, but for $130 and less clutter, manual is a great thing for nastier than stock engines.

Re: Those running a Vacuum Canister / Reservoir

i run a vacuum can and it drives like factory. Mounted in the same spot as well, but the hydroboost setups are super sweet as well as the manual setup, but worst case you buy the can and it doesn't help toss it on ebay and you shouldn't lose much $$.
