wheel well cutout pics for bigger tires

Ended up doing this earlier in the year and never got around to taking pics. Right now that's a 275/60R15 tire, with a LOT of space around it width wise still, hoping to stuff a 325/50R15 under there eventually so we'll see how they fit. This question comes up all the time on where to cut and what to weld in it's place, so I removed the entire bumpstop area and cut down the ridges behind there and knocked them flat and welded them shut as well as hammer mods to the front area.

The last pics you can clearly see what area needs to be cut out and what hammer mods need to be done to clear a 28x10.50 tire, I'll have to cut out a little more in the front I think to fit the 28x10.50W tire or the 325/50R15 drag radial, but nothing should be too extreme

thanks, I tried to keep it civil looking, but swinging that hammer sure was fun.

Re: wheel well cutout pics for bigger tires

Suppose you could show some pictures from a little further back? I'm trying to get an idea as to where you hammered there. The back top area i'm guessing?
Any modifications to the outer wheel well, or did you just get the "right" backspacing?
I'm going to have to get a 325/50/R15 once this car gets running right...

Still having tuning issues? You've had some trouble with that car, hope you get it figured out.

Re: wheel well cutout pics for bigger tires

ha! That's the understatement of the century! I get a small bug, and during the course of fixing it something much bigger breaks.
-low on oil, replace oil pan gasket
-somehow this causes pushrods to bind in slot. Remove heads, drill out pushrod slots, get SA rockers
-Now coolant getting into oil. Replace head gaskets, intake gaskets, and finally run stop leak. All is well
-Rear end started leaking while car is parked, replaced gasket, and refilled (nice and slowly, 90wt moves slow)
-Oil pan starts/continues to leak
-Upper RPM fueling issue returns, after factory pump was replaced with another factory pump.

So now I continue trying to find out if i'm losing fuel pressure and need a new pump, or if there's something in the lines, etc. Also fighting with an annoying shifter that locks me into 2nd gear sometime - usually when merging onto a 6 line highway with no shoulder....

Wow, I must have missed some of your threads. It'll all be worth it when it's straightened out. Good luck.

I'm going to have to get a 325/50/R15 once this car gets running right...

Pictures are actually posted on the link in my sig on the last page. The outer wheel well has been opened up and the lip rolled, that was done during paint and body work, I told the painter to make it as large as possible. I'm going to continue to cut into the body more to make 6-6.5" of backspacing work I think, since I don't like the look of 15x10 in 5.5" with this large of a tire on there it might stick out 1/4" and that's unacceptable to me. Hammering is on the inner front at the bottom, if you look at your wheelwell you'll see where. I hope you plan on running a TON of power to get a 325 drag radial when 11s are easily done on a 275/60 M/T drag radial.

Re: wheel well cutout pics for bigger tires

No thread started for me. I'm going to hook up a pressure gauge first to see what's up. I don't think my '82 had an in tank pump. When I dropped the pump during restoration I only saw a few wires going there, I think for the fuel level sender.

Ok xpndbl3, i'll check that out later. I wasn't thinking of a 325 drag radial, just a normal tire. The tread life is a little scarce on drag radials, I was thinking just a very wide normal tire. Hopefully get more grip than a thinner normal tire, yet still have long tread life.

oh yea, that's a really slick picture in your sig too. The fake smoke is a little phoney though, i'd prefer to see the back of the car.

Re: wheel well cutout pics for bigger tires

skip a normal tire IMO, you want traction get a drag radial, a 245 drag radial would hook better than a 325 street tire, they're a night and day difference. Yea they only last for 2-5k depending, but who cares on a weekend cruiser? those tires would last me until they started to dry rot and lost the oils in them before I'd run them bald.

Re: wheel well cutout pics for bigger tires

Yea, good point. I might replace the current 275/60's with drag radials once they start to wear out. Or I upgrade the power enough to need it.
I plan on driving it a fair bit once it's running right though. Not daily or anything, but for the 4 months of summer, fairly often.
I think a decent quality street tire might be good enough, i've heard good things about Kumho's. I'll see what's decent and available in 275/60/R15.
My BFG "exentia"s (radial TA, walmart knockoff) aren't going to cut it for long.

Re: wheel well cutout pics for bigger tires

If '82s did have intank pumps, I'm just sucking through mine and it works great.

Ah the BFG Drag radial 2 eh? That comes in a 275/60/R15, but the Drag radial 1 isn't available in many sizes.
haha, the 325/50/R15 is only $10 more than the 275/60/R15.... Damn I wish I had wider wheels....

grumble grumble....
Yea, I need to get my detroit true-trac, and aftermarket axles... then i'll be laughing. I still don't think i'd try a 2nd gear burnout with those, i'd just heat 'em up in 1st.
See sig, single tire fire is easier on the rear
