when is a stiff sidewall necessary?

With this jegster torque arm everyone is mentioning to me to step up to a 28x10.50 ET drag in a stiff sidewall. When are stiff sidewalls necessary?

Re: when is a stiff sidewall necessary?

I run them, but only because my 28x10.5 w's were wadding up real bad and the stiff sidewall gave me a little better react on the pro tree by not wrinkling as bad. M/T just recomends the stiff sidewall for heavier cars.

This is straight from their site.

"The advantage of a stiff sidewall is less tire wrap or sidewall distortion, thus reacting better at launch. Note: This is good for heavy cars, or cars with a suspension, that can absorb the initial launch. If you are running a fixed suspension car like a dragster or an altered, you would need the tire to absorb the launch, thus a softer sidewall. There are two ways to stiffen the sidewall. 1. Run tubes to help support the sidewall. 2. Matching the tread width with the wheel width, or going 1 wider on the wheel width, will stiffen the sidewall."

Re: when is a stiff sidewall necessary?

Well this jegster torque arm is a shorter arm and is supposed to really punish the sidewalls and hit the tires hard, which is why I'm debating the stiff sidewall. Figured I'd ask around if anyone had a pro/con for running them with my kind of suspension setup. It's all double rod ended chro moly suspension so there isn't any give in this setup at all.

can't help you there, I run the spohn full length torque arm. I just know the stiff sidwalls helped my 60ft times.

Re: when is a stiff sidewall necessary?

It's recommended that a heavy car, 3000+ pounds use a stiff sidewall tire. You could also run a regular tire with a tube.

My new tires are a stiff sidewall and I don't run tubes.

Re: when is a stiff sidewall necessary?

So basically since my race weight is over 3000 pounds I should use a stiff sidewall regardless of suspension setup? Why do 90+% of heavy vehicles still use the regular sidewalls then?

Re: when is a stiff sidewall necessary?

Because they're supposed to be running tubes in them.

I still run tubes in my stiff side wall slicks.
