First time at track....not to good

I`m a little disapointed with my times but they got better the more I practiced. My 60 ft are horrible and traction is a huge issue.I`ve got to get 3.73`s and some slicks.Everybody I raced beat me out of the hole but I would catch back up and even won a couple(barely). and would have won a couple more if it was a 1/4 mile instead of 1/8th cause I was gaining hard on everybody once I got traction.I spin all the way into third and bark the tires pretty good when it cathes.Best 60 ft 2.37.Best 1/8th 9.401 @ 79.19 mph.My speed seems pretty good.I just got to get some traction. What do yall think. What should I get first,Better gears or slicks/drag radials?Oh yeah, and what would that calculate to in the 1/4 mile? Thanks.

9.401 is roughly a 14.70 1/4 mile. Get those 60' times down and you'll drop your ET quite a bit. That being said, sticky tires before gears.

Yeah...MPH is good for 9.Oh's with a 2.0 60ft or so. Probably more like 8.90's.

Re: First time at track....not to good

I had a tbi 350 out of a 95 suburban with headers y-pipe and exhaust with a built 700r4 with 3.08 gears and i ran 9.70s on street tires with a v-6 rear end and i managed to get a 2.09 60ft but track prep was good and the 3.08s helped alot with traction,in your case if you plan on getting slicks or dr's and a stall it will help alot but you better be carefull with the stock rear..

Your mph is good for high 8s in the 1/8 mile. I run 8.6 with 82mph and 2.0 60ft. You need traction bad!!!

Re: First time at track....not to good

My trans and rear diff are both weak and could go at any time under hard driving conditions,so I am planning on upgradeing both as soon as money permits.I do need to keep practicing,This was my first time at a track so I should get a little better with time.I was with my son and really had no instructions it was just a watch and learn, trial and error type thing. My rear is already clunking and the pinnion seal is spraying gear oil on my undercarraige. Most of the races I felt I had the faster car just ran out of track.Think I`ll see 13`s with good tires/gears?Anybody got some 3.73`s for sale?

Re: First time at track....not to good

13s are very possible with any L98 car. I wouldn't go anyhigher then a 3.42 gear with the stock tpi setup.3.23s are great gears for the stock TPI.You can have all the gear in the world and if you don't get traction, its just a smoke show. Get some good slicks,a good stall 2500-3000, and fix the rear and you will run solid 8s in the 1/8 and 13s in the 1/4.Good luck!!

Re: First time at track....not to good

Well I`m not planning on keeping the tpi stock for long. With an aftermarket base, runners and everything ported do you think 3.73 is still to much?

3.73 Are a little much for a stock TPI car, but stickies tires will pay off with them.. I opted for 3.73's when mine was stock for same reason as you - I knew I was modding from there..
Seems the 3.73's stayed with the car all the way to 10.0 et, when my 87 was basically stock with a couple exhaust upgrades and tires and 3.73's in went 13.78, and sure ther was more left but did not want to wait to start modding.. also at that times was going to be happy with a low 13 second car..lol then low 12's then low 11's then low 10's and was destined for 9s this year till I totaled it..
