Mar GMHTP - Kudos to GTA matt & TPI-Formula350-

Got the March issue of GMHTP in the mail, the one with the results of the budget bolt-on shootout held last summer. Recall that you had to be running a stock longblock to compete. GTA matt and TPI-Formula350- took up the challenge and did very well. Matt's GTA went a best of 13.48 at 102 mph and Eric a best of 13.52 at 102 mph in 91-97 deg F air with a heat index up to 107 deg F! The story doesn't mention it but I suspect the track wasn't biting too well either based on everyone's 60' times. I think Matt and Eric represented us well. Thanks!

Congrats. after tranny rebuild and stall I went to the track in 90 degree weather and ran 101 in my car. those mph's are very believable.

i dont remember what bolt ons they had, i'll have to refresh my memory..but those mphs are believable.

my stock TPI trapped 100mph in the cold late late fall. been 98 many times. went 13.63 at 96.9...lower mph than usual so something wasnt right that day.

good job guys!

I havent got the mag yet. and the track wouldnt hold at all. I think my best 60' that day was a 1.90 and that was feathering the gas. The car also spun on the 1-2 shift

yeah, the track was very slippery. Could not hook at all, my best 60' that day was also 1.90. Had to baby the car out of the hole. 107* heat index sucked!!

This shootout was one of the reasons I let my subscription run out and havent seen the new issue...... I also see that the wild claims of 12s@104mph were not realized, although they do seem slightly more plausible now given track conditions, but I am still skeptical. What times were the LT1 and LS1 cars running? You guys were running stock times for LS1 cars...

I think the fastest LS1 cars were running mid-high 12's. There were no LT1 cars at the shootout. One guy did spray his LS1 to a high 11. If the track would have been in better shape i don't think the heat would have played as big a factor in the E.T., they didnt prep the track at all.

Wow, no LT1 cars? Where the heck were all those guys at, replacing their optisparks? Maybe there were none with mods that fit the rules of the game. That is weird. So it ended up L98s vs LS1s huh?

99 Formula LS1 bolton car ran 11.51@ 121mph with 150 shot. and 12.75@106 on motor.
01 Firehawk bolton car best was 13.04@107
01 Ram air LS1 bolton TA went a best of 13.36@109
89 Formula 350 Bolton L98 best 13.52@102
90 GTA L98 bolton best was 13.48@102
88 305 TA bolton car best 15.89@91
no LT1 cars showed. Every one was about a half second off there normal ETs. It was 97* - 107* heat index- No track prep!. With temp like that I don't think it is hard to believe 12.9-13.1 @ 104 MPH claims should be in question. If it was 50* out I'm sure me and Matt would have been turn those numbers which we have in the past. Both have previous time slips to prove it.

The E/T I can believe. The trap speed on the stock runners, plenum and cam- i cannot, have not and will not.

Heads have been worked and the intake has gotta be paper thin to trap that. Even L98 Vette guys that hav run 12's with bolt ons can't trap 104.

This has been debated endlessly here. I have already expressed my opinion about these guys' trap speeds. I don't mean to come on here and call people outright liars, but the trap speeds with the claimed mods dont add up, period. I guess its just one of those things we will have to agree to disagree on.

A lightly modded LTR TPI motor can trap 99-101.

An LT1 motor can trap 101-105.

A stock LS1 motor can trap 105 and know a few that have trapped as high as 109.

TPI cars were always HP rated dead on or a little overated. LS1 cars have notoriously been under rated. I had a '99 T/A that put 307 to the rear wheels with a K&N filter and an airlid. Do the math when the engine is factory rated at 305HP and it is really putting 360 to the crank.

Now, I have not seen one TPI car on stock cam/heads/stock runner/plenum that can move that much air to pull a 3,600lb GTA to 104mph at the big end.

It's not possible w/o moving enough air to make at least 275RWHP. TPI's just can't feed a 350 enough air to do that.

The E/T I can believe. These cars make enough low end torque that if you get the car moving fast enough for the first half of the track and have the right torque converter, it will E/T nicely.

TPI-Formula350- times and trap speeds seem reasonable but GTA Matt's seem little off for what he has listed in his sig, either way still nice to see some great times out of these old birds!

+1.... TPI forumla350 has full bolt ons...superram intake..thats gives alot more flow. i can easily see 104mph in that. my friends L98 with SLP runners and TPIS bigmouth goes 99-100. one time it has hit 102. but his 3.73 gearing makes him trap over 5300rpms in third...and he shifts to 4th.

Very true. The Formula is lighter, has the better SLP headers, and has a Super Ram intake. The GTA is heavier, with the edelbrock headers and has the stock intake parts.

I've seen GTA matt's car run at MIR. Whether or not the mods he has listed is true, I can't say. Never talked to him or looked the car over. However I do know that I have seen that car run high 12s, with some decent MPH. A TPI may not be the best intake, but very dense and cold air makes cars run faster than usual. I've run both my cars in unreal air (-2000ft DA) and it feels like rocketship (and track times reflect it) compared to a hot summer day.

I can only say that my car has stock heads and cam. It has gone bottom 13's @ 104 but that was with great track prep and nice temps ect... The magazine and track arn't BS about the ET's,MPH,Temps ect... That day it went 13.52@102 with a 107* heat index. I have no reason to BS anyone including myself. Thanks to the guys who have said they think my comb sounds legit for the times and MPH I/ magazine have stated.

Specs on my car.

- Weight with driver: 3580
that was barely any gas i believe. so around 3600 even most likely.

- Best time (04/14/06): 60 foot 1.746, 1/8 8.498 at 79.09 mph, 1/4 13.449 at 101.86 mph : Capitol Raceway

Its all about the launch for my car.

My car will range from 96-97 mph with a horrible launch and spinning way to much 2.4 60 foot. to 1.7 60 foots around 101 mph. It was consistent at 98mph

All stock tpi engine never opened as far as i know, about to hit 99k miles had it since 62k miles

I will be happy with a 13.1 this year at around 102 mph. and i believe my best time was with my stock chip and base timing set at 8.

I seen his car run too the best i seen it due was 13.4. Seen the engine tpi looks stock runners who knows about the base or plenum. Still 13.4 for his mods is good.

my old 89' L98 auto Vette trapped 104.79 with just a front ypipe, catback, free mods, K&N filter, AFPR, drag radials, crank pulley, and a 2500 stall

there are quite a few full bolton L98 Vette guys trapping 107 - 108. do a search on www.corvetteforum.com for forum members Vic89 and TA

umm... and? my reply to this thread was to dispell the assumption that someone made that even bolton L98 Vettes couldnt trap any better then 104mph. my old Vette, as well as other members on www.corvetteforum.com, disproves that theory

and FWIW, my fully loaded Vette weighed around 3400 without driver. theyre not as light as you think
