New E.T. Breaks for NHRA Sportsman

Not sure how I missed this for almost a month:
http://www.nhra.com/content/general.asp?articleid=17519

Specifically:
As of Dec. 4, 2006

Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman
Page 18 (12/06)
Designations: Change SPORTSMAN e.t. breaks to “12.00 to 19.99 (7.50 to 12.60)”

Used to be 13.00 to 19.99. I noticed they allowed 12.xx dial-ins at Pomona in November ( http://www.nhra.com/2006/events/race23/results/sm.html ), but never saw anything that said it was okay. I guess it's official now.

For those of us at altitude, it makes a difference when we go down to sea level to race in regional or national events. I sand-bagged at the Div 5 finals in Topeka back in September, because the car would run 12's but we were only allowed to dial 13.00-19.99.

Of course, now I'll need to dial, and not just race the stripe, should I make another appearance at such an event. . .

Our tracked changed it to 11.50 and up last year.

The problem you Denver guys will have is that you'll build low 12 second cars now that will run deep into the 11s at real tracks.

Our track allows "street" type classes to run as quick as 10.00 (although very few are that quick). If those guys run 11's up here, that's 10's at sea level. They don't have any choice but to go to Pro at the division race. Why they don't make the ET breaks to match the NHRA requirements is beyond me. 13.0's here would be very close to 12.00 at sea level.

Why they let the divisions do whatever they want is also a mystery to me. One of the divisions has a run-off between the Super Pro and Pro winners to determine who goes to Pomona - go figure.

Its less of an issue here as we are so far away from the rest of Div 6 that very few go to the ET finals and they can run whatever division they want if they do go. There was a meeting to change ours back to 13.0 but the vote went the other way and its now 11.50.

Jimmie Barrett, from my track made it to Ponoma again this year. He had the points at our track in Pro, Street, and Bike. He is a tuff cookie. We are trying to get the slow end established for Pro. As it is now, 6.20 to whatever. My GA runs 6.70s, and it's a bear to run against a 14.0 pu truck. In street there is NO times established. As long as it is street legal it can run.

I can understand why local tracks need to be able to set their own ET breaks. That's simple marketing economics.

But, when you get to the regionals, which are qualifying for the national final, they should be consistent. And, when held at high altitude tracks like here, the altitude correction factors should be applied (12.00 becomes 13.00, approximately).

But, there I go again. . .
