New to drag racing / mild motor / no traction

Alright guys,
Lemme pick your brains a little. I've never really been into racing, but I'll make a few passes here and there. I was looking to make a few 1/8 passes this weekend with some new mods, and was curious how much faster I'd be. However, due to traction, I'm now slower, here's how it breaks down:

12 months ago:
L98 - ZZ4 cam - full MSD ignition - 1.75" SLP/Hooker exhaust - rebuilt 700R4 with all the line pressure shift kit crap and a B&M 2400 Holeshot - 2.77 9 bolt.
First time to the track EVER, and had a best 9.44 with a 1.8 60 foot. (don't remember the MPH, sorry!) Nothing special, but for a newbie, it was fun, and I was happy.

I've since added a 3.27 9 bolt and an Eiback pro-kit. Without really thinking, I thought I'd be quicker, but I'm now painfully traction limited. I didn't think my mild L98 would have any issues with traction, but I was wrong. Best I could muster was a 9.6 at 76mph. 3 passes, never got the 60 foot under 2.6 Car is timed/tuned GREAT. Rides awesome. Pulls hard. VERY happy with how she's running, but I just can't hook.

I guess what my question is is this: Is this normal? Welcome to drag racing? I always felt like drag radials were for "fast" cars. Do I need 'em? Are they the solution, or just a band-aid on a mis-matched set-up?

A week ago I couldn't have cared less, but now I feel like I need to fix this! Like I said, I'm no "drag" addict, I just want to feel like I'm getting faster, not slower!!!!

A 1.8 60' is very good, the 2.6 isn't (obviously).

First question: what tires are you running, and at what pressure? If street tires, start off at street pressure, then drop it a little until no more improvement. Many street tires work best at street pressure.

Second: When you went from the 2.77 to the 3.27 gear was it a gear swap or entire rear? Did you check pinion angle afterwards?

Not sure what composes the Eiback pro-kit, but if not included you should consider relocated LCA's.

Tires are BFG G-Force, 245-50-16s. I was running about 34 pounds. Most of the talk I've heard says not to drop under 30 for street tires. I dunno. I didn't make a change.

I swapped a whole rear in, not just a gear. No I didn't check the pinion angle. Probably a bad idea.

....as for the pro-kit, yes, relo/LCA's are recommended to eliminate hop. I had no previous issues, so I wasn't real worried. Again, maybe a bad idea.

Thanks for the feedback

It's been a long time but when I was running 3.27 gears, I believe I was getting 1.7xx 60' times. No matter what you do for performance, if you can't hook up, ET will suffer. Having a set of track only slicks will help but if there's no track prep even a car with slicks will have trouble hooking up.

The best you can hope for is to buy a set of slicks and wait for a good day when they prep the track so you can have good traction.

well the gear change should have helped, but the pro kit will negate any weight transfer that the old stock springs would have allowed. Best I can say is slicks and some good old fashioned pedalling out of the hole, you should be able to get down to 2.0s on street tires with those springs, since my buddys do that. Typically they would rather bog out of the hole a tiny bit than spin street tires since once they start spinning your 60' has gone to crap when you get out of it. The biggest single improvement would be slicks or remove weight out of the nose or place some in the rear. My first 60' on street tires I think was a 2.8 back in the day so don't feel bad. I'm sure on street tires now I'd probably still be around there with all this power, but I make sure to borrow or buy slicks for track days.

lca relocaters will make a huge difference as well as aftermarket control arms with some drag radial and you should see some sub 1.8 60' times.
