first time drag racing

Well i talked my boss into letting me race tonight ( I work at PIR) and got 5 runs in. i have an '85 Z28 with a TPI 305 (LB9) and a 700r4 and ran a best of 16.834 @ 83.07. and my best 60 ft was a 2.386. This was my first time ever racing at a drag strip and before i ran i said that i wanted to run at least a 16.8x @ 82+/-. I seemed to have gotten pretty close to my prediction, however i would like to know if i am running the appropiate #'s for my set up. BTW my engine has 133,xxx miles on it, is completely stock and has not had a recent tune up. I just wanted some baseline numbers for future reference. Anyone with more expirience than me think everything is fine?

Sounds slow to me.

When I was stock, my runs on the g-tech were 15.8.
But I have a speed density 305 tpi, a little more power than you.

I just raced for the first time yesterday with my Iroc-z. I think your baseline you setup will be very easy to improve on. Give her a tune up and open the exhaust up a little and you will see tons of improvement. What rear end you got in there. My stock 3.23 posi helps a lot. My mods and time are in my sig. -Nick.

Unfortunately the previous owner didn't have a whole lot of info on the car. I do know that it has an aftermarket exhaust although it doesnt seem like it does anything for performance. Small diameter pipes, shitty welds, etc. another thing is that my car does have a posi however i don't know what gearing. I havn't looked too deep into it but from my understanding camaro's never came stock with a posi rear end, correct? A couple other factors that would affect performance is that i had nearly a full tank of gas, a sub box, and it was just before closing so the track wasn't prepped very well.

Look here for possible rear ends your car came with: https://www.thirdgen.org/1985-chevy-camaro

What was your 60' time?

Your 60 foot times are where you're losing alot of your speed. You should be faster than that. Do all of the free mods, get an exhaust, and tune it up. Get sticky tires or at least lower the pressure to 25psi. You'll be happy with your results after those mods.

I think his 60' is as good as its going to get at that power level. The bigger issue is that he is only trapping at 82mph!

Regardlesss, I hope you had tons of fun and race for years to come.

Yeah, I had a blast. however my tires don't make a sound when they start losing traction so its hard to stall the tranny as high as it can go. Also the car just stops pulling after about 4200 RPMs, I'd like to change that in the future without losing my low end torque. Another thing i forgot to mention is that I have uninstalled all of the A/C components and disconnected A.I.R. I guess my car is a little below average then wouldn't you say?

I would think you should get high 15s out of it but I am not for sure. When I had the stock L69 they were the only TPI 305's I could beat and I ran a 15.5 stock.Like LB9GTA said the newer 90-92 TPI motors had more power, alot of those cars ran high 14s stock. Some had as much as 40hp over your LB9 but I think high 15s are for sure if the car is running right and you get your 60ft down.Good luck!!!

I just looked at the old tech files and that motor must be the 215hp version of the LB9.The ones I always beat where more then likely the 190hp version. The 86&87's had the smaller cam.You should run mid 15s if the motor is not beat to hell. What gears do you have 3.23's?15s for sure!!!

With the high miles on your car and no tune up, your time sounds about right.

Popular Hot Rodding test drove a new camaro in 1985 with the same engine and trany and got 15.45 @ 89.5 mph in the 1/4 mile.

Sounds like the car still runs good. Are you planing any modifications?

Re: first time drag racing

Well after a bunch of testing and diagnosing, I found that my car had been running on 7 cylinders ever since I got it. The wire inside of the boot of the fuel injector connector was completely separated from the connector. I also fixed a distributer problem and did a couple of free mods. That all resulted in this time slip:

R/T ... .172
60' ... 2.201
1/8 ... 9.962
MPH ... 68.18
1000 ... 13.016
1/4 ... 15.597
MPH ... 87.33

I am now very happy with my numbers. I think I can pick up another tenth or so as my best 60' was 2.177 and on my fastest run I manually shifted at 5000 RPM instead of 4500 RPM on my slower runs.

I knew there was something wrong with my car.

my car:
'85 Camaro Z28, TPI 305 (215hp from factory), 700r4, 3.23 posi, 2.5" ARP cat back exhaust (I'm guessing), rear seat delete, AIR delete, A/C delete, gutted cat, Throttle body coolant bypass, removed intake baffles, and descreened MAF. Are there any other free mods that I am forgetting?

Re: first time drag racing

The only thing I have over you is headers and no cat. My MAF still has both screens in it. I can't believe headers make that much of a difference in the quarter mile. My car is a 190 HP stock. Good to see you made an improvement!!

Re: first time drag racing

Well your LT's, 3" exhaust and porting jobs will give you better airflow in the upper RPM range and if I remember correctly didn't you have your engine rebuilt? Your car is freakishly fast for what it's supposed to be.

Re: first time drag racing

Its a rebuilt 305 with stock everything with filters and LT headers w/ 3in. exhaust. I am not even sure if they went through the heads or if they just threw them back on. The ported plenum and air foil I did after I went to the track. I just thought your car would be fairly close to mine, except you have higher miles. We got the same tranny and rear end gearing. I was just saying good to see you made an improvement, that is what its all about.

Re: first time drag racing

with my 190hp lb9 i ran a 15.800 at 86mph wiht a 2.09 60' completely stock as i bought it 2 weeks earlier with 102,000 miles. only things i did before the track was change oil and rearend fluid. and added a bottle of thta restore junk to my oil, but that probably made it worse.

after doing free mods and adding a catback with cut-out in place of cat (teenagers...) with blowmaster 80series on the same bald shitty tires i ran a 15.400 at 88mph with a slower 2.141 60'.

i was happy with the numbers because it performed very near stock times wiht over 100k on her.

Re: first time drag racing

Well I'm getting some Flowtech headers from a friend of mine for $90 ( I've heard all the bad reviews), and am looking into learning how to do my own porting. So maybe I'll reach some low 15's after that but I don't think I'll hit 14's anytime soon with (mostly) free mods. However, I would like to swap to a T-5 soon.
