Questions about track rules?
Next week I am going to take my car down the 1/8mile track here in Houston and get some times.Houston Motorsports Park. It says that anything faster than 8.6 you need a helmet.I thought that you could run 7s before you needed a helmet in the 1/8 mile? What affordable helmets are approved for a track like this.I really don't want to spend 300 bucks on a helmet.Anything that is in jegs or summit?I think its going to run way faster than 8.6.My brothers L98 vette runs 8.63 in the 1/8 mile and I smoke his car.

An NHRA rule book has all the rules in it. However, alot of tracks reserve the right to add their own rules. At my track, it used to be that any car slower than 13.99 did not need a helmet. Now, anyone wishing to run their car must have a Snell approved helmet. If thats the rule, you gotta follow it, or don't race. My track (and I am sure others as well) will rent out helmets. Dont be too quick to buy a cheap helmet. It might save your life. There is an old saying, "If you have a $20.00 head, then buy yourself a $20.00 helmet." If you are just starting out, maybe you can find a used one to buy, that has a current Snell rating.

An open face snell2005 (M2005) rated motorcycle helmet is all you need. You should be able to pick one up for less than $100 from your local motorcycle shop. Just make sure it has a Snell2005 rating so it will be allowed at the track. Not all helmets have a snell rating. You don't need to buy a $300+ SA2005 helmet.
Helmet requirement is up to each track. Many tracks demand a helmet for insurance regulations. The NHRA rule is 8.59 or quicker in the 1/8 mile
