went to the track last night

Well went to the track for my first time. Kinda dissapointing, but alot of fun.
My best run was a 16.4 1/4. Which tells me I have alot of money to spend to get to 13's. I need to know what will be the best way to go. Currently

350
wieland manifold
holly 600 cfm carb
flowmaster exhaust
k&n filter
700r4 tranny

I think i will get a posi track rear end first. and some slicks as my 60 was 2.4
what should i do after that? cam? weight? All help is appreiciated.

What are the specs on your motor? With times like that I'm guessing its just a 350 smogger motor?? If so your setup is probably pretty close to mine (although mine isn't quite finished yet) and heads and a cam would probably make a world of difference. Also, if you do not have them a good set of headers. Then tune, tune, tune.

Well my first guess is that its a 180hp smogger 350 pushing maybe 190hp now.

Thats definately part of the dissapointment package, everyone thinks just because its a 350 its full of power!

Do a bit of tweaking on that thing and it should be alot stronger.

My new build is only slightly different from my smogger 305 with 305 416 heads with just very light work on the intake runners and a xe268 cam and it is a night and day difference compared to the old 350!

you most likely have smog heads, with low compression. if your going to get the power up with out any boost, you need more compression. i would look into a set of aftermarket heads, or some old stock vette heads. i dont know what your budget is like, or what youd like to put into the motor, but if you build up the top end, i think youd be satisfied with the results. assuming that you have a 4bolt main, steel crank, and the other goodies that came stock in most truck motors. before my 331 build i had a 355 smogger, at best it dipped into the 8's (1/8 mile)

or some 416 heads with some work, or some 113 heads with some work or some vortec heads with some work. the possibilities of using factory gm heads from this era (80's to present sbc stuff...don't even look at lt1 or ls1 stuff, it's not worth trying to get to work (lt1, ls1 won't work even with a ton of fab) are endless. they actually made some decent flowing heads.

savage, before we can suggest doing anything to the car, we need to know specifics on that motor.

i understand budget racing. that's what i'm all about! between me and a few other guys here on the boards, i'm sure we can come up with a combo that will work well.

Smog motors have lower compression, lower compression makes your engine more friendly with boost.. just brainstorming.
