Manual Tranny ?'s
All the cars I have ever raced or owned have had automatic transmissions. Now the tranny is out on my Iroc and I would like to convert it to manual tranny. I know nothing of manual transmissions so forgive me if these are dumb questions.
1. Wich standard trannys will work in this car?
2. Wich will handle the most horsepower and abuse?
3. A few months ago I saw a car but instead of 1 stick
it had multiple sticks. What was it?

1: Stock tranny for a simple swap using factory parts. 82-84 had a 4 speed and 83 and up used a T5 5 speed. I can't tell you how much strength each has but the T5 is weak.
2: Factory tranny? Neither. You could swap in a heavier duty T56 but it's not cheap.
3: Depends what you saw it in. Something like a full drag car it's probably a Lenco tranny. Each stick is a gear. You pull each one as you shift to the next gear. Lenco trannies are $2000 - $3000 per gear. Some are 4 speed. Most are 5 speed.
Unless you're in a class that says you must have a manual transmission (Prostock etc) you'll normally find automatics on the dragstrip. Automatics are more consistant. Manual trannies are just a fun factor for street driving.
I use a 2 speed powerglide in my car. I only do one shift around mid track.
