best 350's 1/8,1/4,&60ft. times

I took my car to the local 1/8 track. I have just put in my motor (355 with vortec heads, air gap intake, comp cam 274/286 advance dur, 487/490 lift. 342 posi in the rear. 350 turbo trany with goodies, exhaust is custom y and 3in. back to a 80 series flowmaster) The times where with very bald street tires.

M Best Run Was
9.02 1/8
2.09 60ft.
5.91 330ft.
79.51 MPH

Wondering what others have ran the 1/8 and 1/4 in and 60ft. times in. I'm puttn a cut out on my exhaust, hopen it will help. What do u think I'll get in the 1/4 mile with the setup and 1/8 time I ran?

My 350 went
60ft: 1.96
330ft: 5.78
1/8: 8.94@78mph
1/4: 13.96@99mph

You could see times around the 13.8-14.0 range, your mph is higher than mine, so with good tires im sure you could see maybe a 13.8

Your 9.02 1/8 should get very low 14's if not a high 13 second run in the 1/4.

1/8 mile on a 1.66 short time was 7.78 @ 89mph un-tuned and all motor, at a track that is typically 0.2 slower than a 'good' track. Should go low 7.50's when it's dialed in. Not bad for a manual car.

What does your torque converter stall at? What kinda carb are you running? Those times are pretty slow for a motor like yours, even on street tires.

I agree. Should be somewhere in the 8.7-8.5. Maybe even faster.

9.02*1.56 = 14.07 eeewwww.

How is the compression ratio?

Mt stall is at 2200 and the carb is a Holley 600. The compression should be 10:2:1. The carbs a little small. Im plannin on going to Bristol Dragstrip tommorow and see what it does in the 1/4 if it doesnt rain. I agree with it should be faster. Thats the reason I posted for, to see what others where runnin. Any suggestions
would be great. Im putting a cut out on tommorow morning.

Not to harp or gloat, just trying to help you out. My old setup and your current setup are damn near identical- same cylinder heads, same camshaft, same compression (9.9:1 for me) and a 650 Speed Demon.

The car went 7.88 @ 88.88 with 3.73's and a 3000 stall.

Again not trying to gloat, I would love to help you figure out what is wrong with your setup. 10 mph is a huge difference at the 1/8th mile for two nearly identical motors.

Do you have any idea what your race weight was? What kind of total timing are you running? What is your fuel system like? What spark plugs are you running?

The three biggest mistakes I made with my old setup were fuel system, spark plugs and timing.

I was running a new stock replacement mechanical pump when I got my vortec 350 going with a smaller camshaft. It would run great on the street, but at the track it would run irradically- anywhere from low 14's to mid 15's. Swapping to a holley mechanical pump and a 650 speed demon put me down in the low 13's.

As far as spark plugs, make sure you are running the correct plugs. I was running a UR4 for a while, not knowing that a vortec head requires the longer reach (such as the TR4).

Finally, timing was huge with my motor (as I am sure will be with yours). Since our motors were a lot alike, I can tell you that 36* of total timing is worth a bunch at the track. 34* of total timing and it was a dog out of the hole, would only mph in the 108.XX range. 38* of total timing and it was fast out of the hole, ran out of steam early and would mph 108.XX in the 1/4. 36* of total timing and it would leave well and mph well at well over 110 mph pass after pass.

I think there is a lot more left in your setup, just a few gremlins to work out. Get out there on a sticky tire also, so you can compare timeslips back to back. Take a look at your plugs right after a pass and see how they look, etc, etc.

my best 1/8 mile is 8.80 at 77mph
1/4 on that run was 13.89 at 96.6mph
1.89 60 foot time

your 1/8 at 79mph with a 9.02 time could do high 13's easy, but get that 60 foot time way down and your gonna see some damn good times, mid 13's easy

My plugs are the ACDelco Platniums. My timeing is set 8 degrees. May need to change that sum. I have not checked my plugs since I broke the cam in. The motor has nearly 250 miles on it. I think the biggest thing in my time been a little high is that I only shifted at 4500 to 5000. Im sure the motor can handle 58 to 6000. That could be a big difference. Not real for sure oh. Thanks for the help/opinions UNKOWN_HOST. Ive been thinkin of puttn a 410 gear r 373 in it. That should drop the time.

Wow, I'm not even sure my car will run with only 8* initial timing. Right now I'm running 18* initial and 18* mechanical (18+18=36* total). Have you checked your TOTAL timing? I'm willing to bet its awfully low. What kinda distributor are you running? Timing is essential to an engines power output. If its not at 34-36* you're gonna be losing a lot of power. You shouldnt have a lot of trouble getting into the high 12's low low 13's even with the tight converter and weeny carb.

Went back to local 1/8 track tonight had four runs with the tach set at 5300 to shift. Made a big difference and i plan on runnin the car up to 5800, so I still have a little to improve on that and 60ft times. This was my best and spinning in second really bad.

60Ft: 2.07
330Ft: 5.77
1/8: 8.73
MPH: 84.12

Hope that looks a little better for u UNKOWN_HOST and FREEBIRD. It does to me and I still need to get the timen adjusted. Anymore pointers would be great.

That is MUCH better. Your trap is 84+mph, that's good enough to turn 8.5 glad your getting it dialed in. Traction is my only word of advice. It's the most important thing in the 1/8mile. Get the timing in there and look for some 8.4X.
