Need Launch tips with a manual trans.

So I don't know if i am doing this right or not. I've never been to the track but when I launch on the street the car doesn't blast out quick until the rpms come up higher. Do you guys with manuals rev the engine up to a higher rpm and then drop the clutch and then give more gas. This seems hard on the trans and clutch, or are you supposed to just leave it at idle and drop the cluych and hit the gas right after? Any tips on dragging would be helpful thanks.

The guys I know that race manual transmissions take them up to at least 4000rpm, drop the clutch and mash the throttle. Of course you need sticky tires with this method.

You right in that its hard on the drive train but that is the way to get the best times. If you baby it off the line you are loosing time.

Me, I just take the easy way out with my 700R4 transmission. Allen

4000? That seems too high. I have done it a few times dropping it out of 2000 and that smokes the tires forever. I geuss that is with street tires and on pavement instead of sticky race asphalt. Any other tips for me to get a good launch without breaking the tires loose for so long?

Get off the gas when the tires light up?

You could go up a little on launch RPM but, instead of dumping the clutch and mashing the gas you should try letting the clutch out smoothly and easing into the gas just enough to keep from spinning and keep the revs up. Once you get used to this you can start being a little more aggresive with your launch.

This will take some practice and better tires will help of course but it will come to you.

As for wear and tear on the drivetrain you can always upgrade to performance parts that can withstand the abuse. After all it"s only money.

thanks RS Chris you have been most helpful. I do have a centerforce dual friction clutch so it should be able to take some abuse. Thanks for all the help. I figure it takes more practice than anything to get it right. Isn't it easier on the clutch to drop it out rather than easing it off?

just be prepaired to break a 10 bolt with that dual friction clutch..

if you journey over to the LS1tech board.. its funny to see how many people over there have upgraded the clutch.. then broke the stock rear..

im no expert by any means.. but from what i have seen posted.. people were talking about the abuse is transfered to the rear end since the clutch wont slip.. its transfering all that power to the rear and subsiquently trashing the 10 bolt..

again.. its only what ive read, im not a rear end expert or any expert for that matter.. but i mean it seems feasable.

Yea, bring the R's up to about 2500, when you're getting ready to launch, ease the throttle while slipping the clutch out...

Like he said, it takes some practice to find that perfect sweet spot. Its kind of hard to explain online, when I explain it to people in person I can use hand motions lol.

Slip the clutch. To get the best time it takes a lot of practice. No matter what tire or motor, if you can use the clutch to limit the power to the rear the rpms will stay up so the motor doesn't bog down, and the tires won't spin. It's like drag racing a bike. Feather it. Does this wear out the clutch faster? Hell yes, but you will be fast a the end of the day.

And to save that 10 bolt, pull up on the E brake or use a roll control to preload the rear on you're launches. 361rwhp and 551rwtq w/ nittos and a 5-spd the rear lasted a lot longer this way.
