Tire size decisions

Alright, I'm having a heck of a time deciding what I want to go with for tires for next season.

Last season I ran a 275/55/15 drag radial, which was 26" tall. This year I can run a full slick because I wont be racing in a class that requires a street tire.

With the 26" tall tires and 4.10 gears i shifted at 6k and went thorugh the traps in the quarter at 6k. In the 1/8 I went though at about 4800.

This years motor should make peak hp at 5500, so it looks like a 26" might be the way to go again, but will it provide the traction I need? The drag radials would hook, but would spin if I wasn't careful. I was considering going to a 28", but I'm not sure how much rpm it will kill, and I dont want to switch rear gears.

Maybe some hoosier 26x10? They list at 26.4" with a 10" tread width, whereas m/t of the same size list at 26.0" with a 9.6" tread width. They both reccomend 9" wide rims, 8" should still work fine though right?

those only come in quick time pro's (like an et street) not full slick.

but it is a possibility... i'm just more concerned with keeping the rpms up

they will still hook great though. i know plenty of guys running deep into the single digits with quicktime pros. personally, i am a big fan of drag radials though.

Stick with the gears you've got and stay with the current tire height unless you know you need a different height tire.

Tire width depends on the type of tire. A DOT tire like ET Street or QTP are measured across the section of the tire. The tread will be less. Read the full tire specs off the web sites. A drag slick width is the tread. The tire section will be wider. From the looks of it you already know about the height. A MT ET Drag 28x9 is actually only 27.3" tall. If you were after a 28" tall tire, you'd be still too small so you need to know the true height and width from the specs, not just what the tire is listed at.

I wouldn't even consider any other slick brand. Those 3 brands cover about 95% of all the slicks used.

Yeah thats what I'm thinking, just stick with the current height and gears. I'm settling on a hoosier 26x10 slick the more I think about it, unless someone can convince me otherwise.

I wouldn't consider any other brands either than the 3 you listed.

You've probably read it 100x's I was and still am a big Hoosier fan and am switching back, still have 1/2 tread left on these M/T so I wanna use them up first before going back down to 28"

IMO, stick with the Quik Time Pro DOT slicks. They are what I actually had my best 60' with with no tubes at 10psi. Although you can run true slicks, by running the DOT approved tire it will allow you to compete at different venues with different rules. If it does'nt have DOT stamped on the sidewall, there will be guys crying about that-believe me!!! They always held up great doing the street/strip thing and it's what everybody in our little "klan" uses and everybody's just happier than heck.

I started out with 26", then moved upto 27" and did not see any performance gain/loss anywhere, you wont go wrong by stepping into the 27" or even the 28". You might slow down when going 28" but I can bet you money your 60' wont move even on the hottest day and greasiest track, so with our game it's not always a bad thing running a little slower if your dead on every pass.

If/when you get ready to buy a set, call this guy Larry Hodges- http://www.larryhodge.com I got turned onto him last spring and it was the best thing yet, way cheaper than Summit or Jegs on tire prices with the shipping included I saved $50 on the set I got now and he quaruntees them to be less than a month old from the factory so you dont get "yellowed" sidewall lettering. Took 2 days from the time I called until the tire showed up at the house. I bought 2 sets from him last year and will be buying the rest of my tires through him. Very nice guy and will help you pick the tire that will best suit your needs.

BTW, your gonna have to check out our tracks schedule this year. One time $150 entry for Sat AND Sun for a shot at $2K both days- win 2nd round and you start the $50/per round money. Then they're having quite a few of those night races again this year, not to give away my fishin hole, but it's like shooting fish in a barrel. $20 entry, 4-7 rounds for $300 If you can cut a .700 or better and run with 1.10 of your dial, your a shoe in-unless we meet up

IHI - You are the man! Thanks for all the help... and yeah, the quick time pros would be fun just so i can play at some street events.

You guys have bracket races on your street nights? hmmm sounds like fun

Those street night drags are like this:
Gates $20 for car driver $10/spectator -this might change on the spectator side a little cheaper but have'nt heard anything yet.

They usually have open T&T for about 2-3hrs and divide the staging lanes into radial tire/slicks and run a group for awhile then run the other group for awhile.

Then it turns into eliminations and it's run just like a bracket program. If you win that round your on standby till they call you back around-which happens really quick, then after 2 or 3 rounds it's round robin, soon as you pick up your ticket you head right back to staging lanes.

I find it to be good practice, same price as a T&T so I get to hit the tree alot, then since Im usually the faster I can practice my down track driving, sometimes it's close, but most time you let off waay before the 1000' and just whooomp whooomp the rest of the way

Another night that'd be worth the drive would be our night of fire July 30th. Being how you've gotta a fairly good pull to get up her, night of fire would be the best bang for the buck, Jets, outlaws, nitro cars, etc....They finally wised up and did'nt schedule a points race that night, but we're running a Big Bucks so there should be some good money to take a shot at for minimal entry.
