New Racecar
A week and a half before Christmas my son comes home with a 1991 Camaro RS. Says he wants to make his own car for the 2005 season.
We are now a week or two away from completion.
The car is gutted, 10 point cage (my xmas vacation), 9" moser w/5.14 gears and spool, 29.5 X 10.5W slicks, weld draglites on front. Suspension setup matches current car (1.52 60' w/milder 350). Engine is .030" over 350 four bolt block w/hooker super comps, mech. roller cam (275 dur/.630 lift) 12.7 -1 CR, 235 cc runner alum. lightning heads, single plane, 830 Holley, 6" forged rods, USA made forged steel crank, 5750 stall converter and th-400 trans.
The car is optimized for 1/8th mile drags. Anyone want to guess what this combo will run? Current (now mine) car ran a best of 7.18 in 1/8th as trans gave up. Motor is much stronger in new car. Sons wants to be quicker so he is the one chasing.

couldn't tell you what it could run as I don't have experience yet with something like that, but it sounds very similar to the car I'm starting to build up. I'm just planning on running 1/4 mile. good luck with it.

I will guess a 7.00 1/8 mile with the new car.
Have you had it to the track yet?

The 1.77 60' was with worn out 305. Had airbags in rear along with lakewood lower control arms, adjustable panhard bar and jegs 3500 stall converter. Slicks were M/T 28 X 10.5 X 15.
When we swapped in 350 (1st setup) the 60' dropped to 1.61 and ET dropped to 7.6X. Then we had to add weight with rollbar. Then kept adding HP till it reached resent tune.
The new car is close to identical with better engine and gears. Should be faster overall.

We had to do a lot of mods to get rear brakes to hold beyond 2200-2300. Once we changed to Moser 9" problems were eliminated. We can launch antwhere up to 4500 RPM now though it shakes tires on too high a launch.
The car is a lot of fun... hooks hard. The new car should launch even harder.
Will be at Imokkalee with both cars Friday night for testing. If this cooler weather continues, red car should set new best time. New car is question mark... hoping it will be aleast 2 or 3 tenths quicker than red car.

We are still using stock torque arm. I have not seen any trouble with it. Airbags seem to make biggest difference along with drag struts in front. The picture above was when we were running 7.4x.
Most recently we were using taller slicks (29.5) and car was only running 1.55-1.56 60' , though best overall time (7.18) was with bigger tires. Have added LCA relocation brackets to change angle of control arm. I hope this allows me to hook with 28" tall tire. This is what gave best 60' time overall.

350 seems to work okay. Thought about 383 or 400 based motor and decided to see how fast we can run with 350.
The new car has following advantages over old car:
200 lbs less weight mostly in front end: alum. heads, drag light wheels and skinnies, removal of honeycomb crash bumper.
5.14 gears for 1/8th mile along with looser converter.
Stronger solid roller cam, 6" rods, bigger carb. and headers. Cam has 7500 RPM peak. Existing car has 6500 RPM peak.
If it only goes 7.0x, son would be disappointed as existing car should hit high 7.0x's with shorter tires in cooler weather. Wants to be able to run in sixes before adding nitrous.

Yes, they stick out. Did not want to tub, may run stock suspension class later. Rims are 15 X 10 steel and tires are M/T 29.5 X 15 X 10.5W. Had them on red car and they looked huge.

You can run either a 10.5 x 28 or 9 x 30 slick using either a 15 x 8 w/ 4.5 b.s. or 15 x 10 w/ 5.5 b.s. and the tires will not stick out or rub.
Just as an fyi, my best 60' with the bracket motor was 1.48 while running 11.2x's and with the 305 it's put down a best 1.52 at 11.5x's. When I ran it in bracket trim it weighed 3225 and now with the 305 in J/SA it had to weigh a minimum of 3295 though we just got hit with another 50 lbs that I have to add before the start of the season.

The second car got primered in driveway friday night and ran Saturday. Posted results. Appreciate the wheel/slick/back space info. Will run current setup for a while (cheap steel wheels) due to budget.
