Silver State Classic Challenge

Anyone ever entered or is going to race in this?

I have decided to enter in this year. Its September 18-22.

I am going to enter in the Touring class, which is basically the beginer class.

if anyone wants any info on it, go to www.silverstateclassic.com

its a 90.3 mile road course on highway 318 in Nevada, the only time you can ever drive as fast as you can on a state highway! Should be fun, now to get my car prepped.

Ther's actually a couple of roads used. The highway 318 race is the most popular.

I really, really want to, but I won't be able to do it until I graduate. The Academy seems to frown on "hazardous activities" like that

It would be pretty cool to watch, let alone actually race in it.

One of the absolute baddest cars (IMO) that competed years ago was RJ Gottlieb's 540ci big block '69 Camaro, named Big Red. It held the top speed record for many years, even despite competing against many other high-buck, aerodynamic exotic cars. I can only imagine seeing/hearing that thing fly by at 220+ mph.

Thats a cool race, one I'd like to try one day. Is there any place for more info on that race, like results for older races(1989-1994)? I ask because one if the cars I currently own was raced in the Silver State around those years and I'm told finished with a 156 or 159mph average one year. It's a pretty much stock hardtop TTA and it's probrobly the car I will one day want to race there again.

Good luck

Steve

I ran it in 2002. It is a cool race. I have heard that they are having comm problems. Most of the regulars are boycotting until they fix the problems. Check out www.openroadracing.com I will be going to the PE 130 next. If you have any questions just email and I'll try to answer them. I also have some video of the car show and afterhour party stuff. Great Fun.

Buy the best tires you can afford and keep it between the lines.

That race is 50% phycological- Alot of crap will run through your mind as you are holding your foot to the floor going down straights for sometimes 5 mins +. "what's that noise?", "how's my tires doing?", "is something going to break?"

Get a good nights sleep and best to work out and get your body in top shape for the sustained stress level for 1 hour plus critical driving on continual changing roads (Non repeating closed circuit) You need to be able to concentrate to the best of your ability without fatigue. Your mind can start to drift into a non-reality realm and you become lax on the danger- almost video game like.

well im pretty good at video games..

as far is physical stamina goes im in pretty good shape. i run 5 miles every 3 days.. (i dont jog i run 6:30minute milers) and surf(yes it takes a lot of arm and upper body stamina)

those are awesome tips Dean. So you being the tire/suspension guru, what tires should i be looking for? the size is 275/40 17's right now i have Goodyear F1's (non super car) and the tread is still pretty good on them considering i dont drive the car as a daily.

the mods i am doing before the race are:

#1. 6 point cage(built custom by a friend)

#2. racing seats(the adjustable kind, i think im going Corbeau)

#3. 5 point simpson cam lock harnesses(already have them)

#4. LT4 Hot cam(already have it)

#5. Vortec heads(Don has them)

#6. SFC.. dont know which to buy(probably use Lon's from TDS)

#7. better shocks(right now i have KYB GR2's)

#8. deleting the back seats.

any other upgrades i should do other than what is in my sig?
i was thinking about the radiator.. right now my fans come on at 185* and my car never gets above 195* ever. but considering its in the damn desert in the summer has me thinking.. i also wanted to know how those guys run a cooler for the rear diff fluids.

The first time out you should go stock. Reliable is the main word. Next is have Z rated tires. The rating on your tires limits your Tech speed(Top speed allowed) I built a car before going and now that I have seen the other third gen cars there the plans changed. I started another car to fix the things done wrong the first time. I think the top speed you can go the first time is 130 Mph target/165 tech. A good start speed class is the 110 mph(Very Competitive)Or the 115mph. Tires Tires Tires are the big thing.

On the www.silverstateclassic.com web site is a pdf version of the rulebook. That's what will list your requirements for each class. That will be your bible to build a car to compete.

Remember, this is not a speed race, but a rally race. Unless you're in the unlimited class, you have to cross the finish line with an average speed as close to your class speed. The main race has about 3/4 of the road as a basically flat stretch but the last bit of the road called the narrows means you're going to be going much slower that your class speed.

Like any other rally race, you need a good navigator who can tell you what corners are coming up, how sharp they are, what side of the road you should be on going in and out of the corners, how fast or slow you're doing as you pass each mile marker etc.

Only the unlimited class have no speed restrictions. Just think. A 90 mile course done with an "average" speed of just over 200 mph.

Dave, If I were doing it in my Camaro, these are the tires I would buy.

i think i have a set of 16x8 wheels at my other house.. and seeing how the 16's are cheaper than the 17's i might just do that.

Hi guys-Open Road racing is the biggest rush you can get in your car IMHO. Stephen is right on.

Something else to consider is that you wont start out in a fast group until you have run the course before-some even have rookie training days before the event. Then you have to pass a very stringent tech inspection, and have all the required safety gear, which varies by speed.

Other than mechanically sound, in NV, heat will be your enemy-need an aluminum radiator, oil cooler, trans cooler, and diff cooler with associated pumps. Full synthetics at a minimum.

For tires, I wouldn't recommend the R compound tires for this-too soft and prone to puncture. Stick with something Y speed rated in stock sizes. I use the BFG TA KD directionals.

If you want a real challenge, enter the www.sorcrace.com in Nebraska. 55 miles of turns and elevation changes, blind hills, etc-nothing like the flat roads in NV. I actually posted some in car footage of last year over on high speed driving.com in the road race section.

Some events have a mile and half mile shootout-See sig for details on that event.

do you have any info on how to run differential coolers? ive seen a few on 4thgens but im not sure how they are doing this. i have 2 pumps at my disposal. a Shurflow and a stock Typhoon IC pump. the real problem would be pluming i guess. do you know of any "how to" sites i can check out?

already have the oil cooler, my tranny is a T56.. can we run coolers for those too?

I have all of them on my Z06-there are a couple of different options. You can build a kit on your own with some coolers from Fluidyne, and a Weldon gear oil pump, or buy a complete kit like this from GM:

12480080 C5 Transmission Oil Cooler Kit 1999/2000
This kit includes the following parts:
12480081 Pump Transmission Oil Cooler 1999/2000
12480082 Cooler - Assembly Transmission Oil 1999/2000
12480117 Wiring Harness 1999/2000
12480118 Clamp - Pump 1999/2000
12480087 Switch - Termal 1999/2000
12480088 Package - Hardware Fasteners 1999/2000

GM PART # 12480080
CATEGORY: All
PACK QTY: 1 CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $1,194.13
OUR PRICE: $835.89

Mine runs on a thermostat and comes on automatically-turning on both pumps at 180 degrees-I have the coolers mounted in the rear brake ducts, but on a Camaro, there is plenty of room-find someplace with good airflow.

Rule 1. Build a real stout cage
Rule 2. Use a very good fuel cell
Rule 3. Use a an extremely reliable fire system.
Rule 4. Use an SFI 5 suit/ helmet.

Then worry about going fast.

Because you are racing in BFE and if things go wrong you're on your own.

If he were building a dedicated race car for something like this, then yeah. Non of that is necessary for the beginner low speed classes.

Mod Edit: Why quote an entire message right after the message?

yeah the rules for the class are pretty simple.. i cant go over 124mph. no cage needed, no fuel cell, all that is required is a helmet, and a fire extinguisher

BUT i am having a 6 point cage put in, plus seats, plus 5 point harnesses(i planed on this a while ago, not just for the race)

thats for the info on the tranny cooler.. i had no idea we could uses these on a manual.

Ok, I've cut people out of cars that bit it at a lot less than 124mph. Just because the rules don't require it doesn't mean you might not need it.
Any way, it's your butt, not mine.

Anybody read the latest Hot Rod? It looks like Dan and RJ Gottlieb are bringing the Big Red Camaro out of mothballs, and has come up with the Z2Z Big Red Challenge. It's a 0 to 200 mph and back to 0 competition to be held on May 14th out in Ely, NV. Do we have any 3rd gens out there that want to take on Big Red?

I think there is a www.bboor.com as well. Do a search for Open Road Racing and youll see a lot of stuff

Re: Silver State Classic Challenge

Er, you replied to a 4-year old post.

The correct link is in the post just before yours: http://www.bborr.com

There is another one in Nebraska, the Sandhills race, at: http://www.sorcrace.com

To my knowledge those plus the SSC are the only operational open road racing events in the country at the moment. There was another one hosted by MKM Productions but a few months ago they announced that 2008 was their final year, and now their website is gone.

For what it's worth, if you search Google for open road racing you'll mostly wind up with links to bicycle races... rather slower than anything most of us are interested in...
