Traction help...

Ok this isn't on my TA...it's a friend of mine's 1970 super bee. it has a 440 maybe 500 hp. solid motor mounts, i think T350 tranny. a 4.80 rear (or somethin like that) and a 4k stall. he's on 11 in slicks and he can only pull a 11.8 1/4 and it seems like it should run faster than that. when he gets off the line he's fine but then the stall kicks in a blows the tires off. i was thinking maybe different gears in the rear. like maybe even 4.11 and maybe smaller stall like 3500. what do u guys think??? sry it's not f-body but it is drag

o...also he had 2 in prim tubes with 4 in collector headers, now he switched to 1 3/4 in with 3 in collectors i think that may be better too. both LT

just let me know what u guys think

Other than that its all in the suspension setup. If the suspension is setup for the street with that drivetrain combo hes gonna have lots of problems hooking up.

Not enough information to make a judgement.

Stall kicking in? No such thing. If he has a 4000 stall converter even if he launches from an idle the engine will flash to 4000 rpm and stay there untill the torque converter output speed matches ithe input speed.

The gears will only hurt him if he spins off the line from too much torque multipliaction. It also depends on the height of the tires. I use 4.56 gears and want some in the 4.7x or 4.8x range.

TH350 in a Plymouth? Not unless he's using an UltraBell. He probably has a TF727

What mph is he trapping at the 1/4? What rpm does he shift at. The smaller tube headers will help with bottom end torque especially if he stays below 6800 rpm although 1-3/4" is really small for the 440.

I think part of his problem is suspension setup. Those old dodge cars have very long leaf spring rear suspensions. When they launch the back end rises up and the spring seperate. To some this helps but to others it unloads the rear suspension and causes wheel hop. If he doesn't already have them, a set of traction bars will help keep the diff from trying to twist around and change the pinion angle.

well idunno, i don't know much about drag racing, thus me asking, but off the line he hooks fine and even if he gives it the same amout of gas he'll start to spin

That being said he's unloading the rear end and needs to tune his suspension. I've seen plenty of cars do this, some will make it 10-15' outta the chute before it happens others it's a split second the tires will plant then blaze, if you watch carefully you will be able to see it all unfold. Best bet would be get a cam corder and tape it so you can replay in slow motion to see the real picture.
