10-bolts at the track

Pitted across the aisle from me last Friday was a 4th gen at the "Club Clash" event. This series brings out a lot of people with fast cars that don't normally race (lots of nitrous and superchargers). I don't know the guy or those he was pitted with, but it was a nice looking Camaro with what I would guess was an LT1. I did notice DR's on the back.

After the first TT, they had the rear jacked way up in the air. I heard him say after he crawled out from underneath, "Good thing I have another car." After the 2nd TT, a tilt-bed tow truck was out there to get it home. Nothing was hanging down, so I assume it wasn't the drive shaft that failed.

I never had a chance to talk to him about it (don't want to look like a vulture, you know). I happened to line up next to and took out one of their buddies in the 1st round, a 4th gen TA. After the race I was walking to the stands to watch my buddies run and he happened to be right in my path (I didn't realize he was part of that group until that point). I stopped to talk to him and he said something about not using the nitrous that night. Wonder if what happened to the Camaro had any part in that decision...

I saw a NOS 4th gen a couple of years ago at the Friday night street legal races do the same thing. He was towed off the starting line and once in the pits they jacked the back end up real high and pulled the rear cover. They sheared all the teeth off on the pinion gear.

I never had any problems when I ran a 10 bolt into the low to mid 11's. Of course it was a heavily beefed up 10 bolt. I sold the 4.10 gears on Ebay. They still looked new.

when we finally got car to hook good with new 350 the 10 bolt broke. Granted it was behind a 3500 RPM stall converter and slicks. The rear had welded tubes, 4.10 gears and 28 spline axles. Also used Summit rear cap support cover as well. Diff was SLP take off torsen.

Took everything apart too see what failed while waiting on 9 inch Moser unit. Internal parts of SLP torsen take off was destroyed, worm gears siezed and small teeth falling out. Was very surprised, expected axle, ring gear or pinion failure. Everything looked great except diff. It was also the first time front tires came off ground at launch.

You mean you don't have to have a sprayed LT1 to do that???

I don't know if the Camaro was auto or stick (the more I think about it, the more I wished I would have talked to him - didn't want to kick a guy when he's down, though). I'm pretty sure the guy I ran was auto (teen-age to low-20's kid was driving - his dad was with him when he rolled down the staging lanes, and the dad was fiddling with the serpentine belt for some reason when I talked to the kid afterwards in the pit).
