1/4 mile estimates for 350 H.O. crate

Hi, I hope this is in the right place, I picked this place over the motor swap board.

I read over on the motor swap board unknown_host ran a 12.93@106 with his 350 H.O. but I don't know if he has carb or EFI? Thats LS1 territory and thats what I'm hoping for, but thats a big hope. If I can beat mild 4.6/5.0 mustangs I will be thoroughly happy!

I kept the TBI in mine. All I have left to do is hook up the MSD wires and hook up the exhaust piping and I'm ready to crank it up. I couldn't finish it in one weekend plus friend, so I haven't had much time to finish it. So pardon the stupid questions.

I know GM rates the 350 ho crate at 330hp/380tq but thats with a 600CFM Holley carb thats probably tuned to hell.

I bought the vortec TBI manifold, had it bored out to 2" and bought a Holley projection base (basically 454 TBI base) so I could get that 600cfm (I HOPE). Look at my sig for the rest of the mods. Yes, I'm running 305 injectors for now (ran out of money), Jet APFR turned up to halfway (10-12psi), will adjust to max probably when I crank it and see how it runs. Yes, ran out of money before I could buy a 350 Cop TBI chip too..

However, I also read another member (he has the Homer Icon, i forget his user though) but he put a 350 LO5 and kept TBI and actually ran worse I believe with the LO5 vs LO3 and he had VERY similar mods to mine, incl complete MSD. I think it was a mid 16!

I dropped around 3500 dollars on this setup and if I run 16s I'll be SO pissed...So basically with my mods, what is my estimated 1/4 time? If its 16s, omfg! I'll crap! I'm only 18 so live and learn.

Thanks guys!

If a 330hp motor is running 100% and everything about the car is optimal, 106mph is on the money for a 3500-3600lb car. But the there are 2 catches: does the motor in your car put out 330hp and is the rest of the car optimized? Probably not on both. I would say if you had the right exhaust, tuning, and drivetrain, the car could run low 14's with 275hp (down from 330 at its best). But you could run high 14's or worse if you have a few things outta whack.

But you try your hardest once the car is all put together to get it running 100% - tuning, drivetrain, intake... until you get your 330hp and put it to the ground and get your low 13 second slips. Believe me, it takes a while.

I have a carb, and yes that is going to make a big difference in the 1/4 as compared to TBI. I only ran 13.7's at 102 with the edelbrock performer 600 carb, which I would assume to be slightly better than or at par with a decent TBI setup. Switching to a speed demon 650 carb took me to 12.93 @ 106.6 and I let a friend drive and he went 12.88 @ 105.8. Dont expect to go out and run awesome times, I ran anywhere from 14.2 to low 15's until I figured out that I had no fuel pressure , and i also have a car that hooks pretty well. Good luck!

Oh and I have yet to lose to a 5.0 or a 4.6 in heads up, and that includes a 2003 cobra, a 1995 cobra, 2 SN95 cobras, a handful of modified and stock SN95 GT's, a holley systemax kitted SN95 GT, a heads/intake/headers fox body LX and a few 60's and 70's stangs. If you can swing it, DEFINATELY switch to carb. If you can afford to modify the motor, bump the compression, put a XE274 cam in it and have some head work done. I currently run 12.68 @ 108.97 on regular BFG radial T/A tires with that setup. I am hoping roller rockers, tuning and locking my timing out will help me my 110 mph goal .

Fredless I would be careful, 305 injectors cannot support anywhere near 330hp.

The car won't be very fast until you can get some much bigger injectors and tons of tuning. A member that goes by JPrevost has the same motor and the same Holley TBI. I would search what he has had to do or PM him for some help.

Ok I got you guys...I'm just looking for a quick daily driver and something that has the kick of a V8. LS1 territory would be nice, but I think now its way out of my price range. No way I can afford to have porting done...Now that this S.O.B. is in the engine bay, I really don't want to rip it out until it has 150k miles on it and it dies...My live in girlfriend just bought a 2001 Grand Prix GT and I agreed to help her out if things got a little tight, since that car will be our daily driver if possible.

So if I just switch to 350 injectors it will be a big help or should I buy 454 injectors? I really do not want to buy a new fuel pump, i'd like to run it at max until it dies of natural causes;or will that still cause it to run lean (with 350/454 injectors) and cause detonation and screw my motor up?

I'm extremely paranoid of running too rich because that is what killed my L03 and caused me to do this swap...

The newest car craft has a "how to port vortec heads" step by step article. Sounds like you just want to bolt it in though.

Yes, bolt right in. Not looking for an LS1 killer, but if thats what I got, yay, if not, cool with me. This will be my daily.

I just want it to run like a V8. If the L03 and this get approximately the same gas mileage and with the L03 its hard for me to beat civics and get 10-12 less mpg, whats the point of a V8? Sorry I don't warrant that. If I just beat or run with mild 5.0 mustangs, I'll be happy.
