I got mine new from a local supplier. 16' open trailer was around $3300 Canadian.
The cost of car trailers depreciate very little since they don't get a lot of miles or abuse. A 5 year old used trailer can cost as much as a new one. Cheap used trailers usually have something wrong with them. They could be home made ones, need tires, are rusted out, the chassis is out of date and can't be licensed (mobile home suspension etc).

For the difference in price between new and used you might as well buy a new one. Stay away from homebuilts, they are not worth the trouble.

I bought my open trailer used for $1K. This same trailer is still available new for anywhere between 1200 and 1500. It has 4 wheel brakes and is rated for 7k lbs. I bought mine from a fellow racer who was stepping up to an enclosed trailer.
Check your local want ad magazines, like the WantAdvertiser. There are usually trailers in there from time to time. But stay away from any trailer that uses a pintle hook, those are normally very heavy and are just converted construction trailers.
