Would an adjustable Fuel pressure regulator help racing

I see lot of people use AFPRs. What is the application? Do you jack it up when you go the track and don't give a hoot about economy, then put it back down when you cruise home on the freeway to save gas or what. I assume it is necessary to increase the pressure when you get bigger injectors, but you also need a custom chip in that case right?
