My Track Times Need Help!

I know I need drag radials, but what else can I do to improve my track times.

89 L98 GTA,96 LT1 cam,9.75:1 compression,fully ported L98 iron heads,1.6 roller tips,SLP 1 3/4 headers,afpr,SLP chip,Hughes 2500 stall converter,billet servo,K&N,3" Flowmaster,and no cat.

2.78-60' "YIKES"
15.13@94MPH

I figure running 94mph after a 2.78 60' might be kinda prommising in my quest for 13s,but I'm not sure if that means much......Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,Beefy

Car: '91 Formula
Engine: 350
Transmission: TH350 built
Axle/Gears: 3.73
With your engine and mods there has to be something wrong. Did you do any other runs? I have only run the 1/8 up to now but my best time is 2.09 60', 9.06 1/8th, 76.45mph. I am told this corresponds to about a low 14 run in the 1/4. My car is a 91 formula L98 with only a few mods (fastchip, airfoil, open K&N). Stock exaust and cam, etc. I am far from an expert but this is what occurs to me

Tuneup - probably to simple of an explanation but my timing was way off when I bought the car and replacing the rotor, cap, and coil with MSD parts, plugs NGK, wires MSD, and setting the timing (10 deg BTDC) helped a lot

Ive been reading a book by JOhn Lingenfelter on building SBC motors and he keeps saying larger is not always better (except for CID). Like the 1 3/4 SLP headers, he says 1 5/8" is better up to about 400HP due to increased gas velocity. You will lose power off the line but gain on the top end. I wouldn't think it would account for this difference tho.

I have heard a TC with the higher stall can be a problem to unless you have more HP, but maybe someone who knows better can speak to this (Stephen)?

Drag radials or slicks would definetely help if tend to spin excessively off the line. That would certainly account for the high 60' time. I run Goodyear 245 50 zr16 on my Formula and they spin like crazy if I stomp on it. I am looking to get some MT ET Drags and use them just at the track.

good luck

The best way for you to look at your time is to figure that for every .1 that you take off of your 60' time, you can figure .2 off your e.t.

A decent 60' time on street tires would be 2.0.
.78 X 2 = 1.56
15.13 - 1.56 = 13.57

So you should run around a 13.57

Keep in mind that this is just a general rule of thumb, and is only good at estimating.

You need drag radials, and to practice your launches.

Your problem is those 60's
You are killing your 1/4's with 'em
Get 'em down and your 1/4'll be where you want it
